Penney’s
mand are as much part of the scheme
as the pursuit pilots in the air or the
plotters and calculators at the Filter
and Information Centers in Colum
bia and other central points. All are
necessary in an efficient system of
air defense for the coastal regions of
•the United States. The work they
are doing is truly a splendid and pa- {
triotic contribution. }
In Clinton there is an active ob- j
servation post of which R. L. Plaxico'
is chief observer. The actual spot
ting is done from a special watching
post set up at the home of Alex
Henry near the city. ' 1
During the open days of Nov. 10,
11 and 12, 168 planes had been cit
ed and reported from the local post,
73 on Monday, 75 on Tuesday, and
20 up to noon yesterday.
The following observers have been
on active service during the three
days: T. Russell Cooper, W. C. Bond,
James P. Sloan, F. M. Stutts, Wyman
Shealy, Mrs. Lois Jeanes, Mrs. Julian
Coleman, Mrs. Louise Peake, R. P.
Chapman, Jas. W. Caldwell and Rev.
J. L, Mayer.
This post has the distinction of be
ing a weather reporting post as well.
One post in each county, centrally
located and well manned, is chosen
to turn in the two-hourly reports on
weather conditions. This information
helps the pursuit officers at the In
formation Centers in making deci
sions on sending out flghter planes. It
must be reliable, for the lives of in
terceptor pilots often depend on the
weather.
. Chief .organizer for Laurels coun
ty is C. K. Wright, superintendent of
schools in Laurens. He has done a
magnificent job in setting up the ob
servations posts there, government
officials state. .
Lt. M. A. Werner, who just last
week completed a 1200-mile tour of
the posts in Laurens and Greenville
counties as personal representative of
General Walter H. Frank, returned
to his headquarters with a favorable
report on the state of the Air Warn- i
ing Service in the two counties. i |
“The observers have just reason to'
be proud of the work they are doing j
for their country,” he said. “We in!
the Interceptor Command are proud'
of them. We need them as much as'
they need us. All are part of a big
team which is working hard for na
tional defense.”
