My First Day Af School
I was nearly 8 years old when I
started to school. My folks lived so
far from the schoolhouse (4 miles)
the younguns had to have some age
on them before they could walk 8
miles a day, plus the .10 miles they
ran and cavorted during the 2 little
recesses and the big recess at dinner
time. (We had never heard of
“lunch” then).
I wore a little striped “linsey”
dress that looked like a cross between
a piece of damask and convict ap
parel: it was part wool and part cot
ton, but the biggest part was cotton.
It wasn’t uncommon for fairly large
size boys to wear dresses* during that
period.
A big bum who looked to be about
17 years old and who was in the
third reader (3rd grade) called me
“sissy.” I got so dad-blamed mad at
him I crawled under the schoolhouse
and stayed there until books had
been turned out. A little later on I
got 4 other fellows that were nearly
as big as he was to help me and we
gave him a good whipping, but he
tore my dress plumb off. I had a time
getting home that afternoon ..' .‘-.‘thru
the woods.
Our teacher had never seen a col
lege but she could write and spell
pretty good, so they said. She taught
me how to make straight marks on a
slate for 3 weeks and then let me
take up my ABC’s. I got so I could
say down to “F” off by heart within
2 months. We didn’t have any black
boards or maps back then. The old

Joanna Mills of Goldville captured
the regular schedule championship
of the Mid-Carolina league Saturday
by smashing out a 11 to 8 victory
over Watts Mills. Joanna’s seven-run
rally in the eighth inning which fea
tured C. Farmer’s home run with the
bases loaded provided the margin of
victory.
Newberry at the same time rolled
up an early lead and then staved off
Clinton Mills’ late scoring rally to'^
take a 12 to 7 victory. Rowe banged
out three hits in four times iqj to
pace the winners.
Joanna will meet the winner of the
Watts-Newberry series in the
Shaughnessey play-off for the league
pennant.
