has new significance,” said the chair
man. “It shows that America still
remembers and honors those who fell
its defense twenty-three years
in
ago; that Americans stiU believe that
America’s free way of Ufe is worth
any sacrifice, and that the spirit of
patriotism still bums strongly in
American hearts.
“The poppies grew on the battle-
front in France Where the young men j
of America defeated the might of au-1
tocracy in a gallant display of the
strength of aroused dwnocracy. When
we wear them on Poppy Day, their
bright red blooms wiU remind us
that our democracy has the strength
to repeU any dangers if we wiU serve
as they served. There is inspiration
for us all in the poppy of great
memories.
“The poppies which the Auxiliary
will distribute here have been made
by disabled veterans at the goverfi-
ment hospital in Columbia. All Pop
py Day workers will serve as volun
teers and all of the money contrib
uted to them for the flowers will go
into the welfare funds of the Auxil
iary to carry forward the AuxiUary’s
work for the disabled, their families
and the families of the dead during
the year ahead.”
