DEFENSE FORCE TO
ORGANIZE MONDAY
Meeting To Perfect Unit
As Part of State Group,
Set By Officers.
aiNTON, JOANNA
TOP OPPONMS
Clinton cut loose its big gvins here
Saturday in Mid-Carolina league
games and blasted Newberry 16-7.
The winners pounded out 13 hits.
Alexander led at the bat with a dou
ble and two singles.
' At 'Laurens, Joanna won over
Watts by the close score of 7 to,6.
The Goldville team scored three runs
Company L. of the Second ^ the sixth inning to tie the score
ment. Thud Battalion of | and added the clincher run in the
Carolina Defense Force, will ^ seventh rack. The victory enatjjed
organized at a meeting to be heW j^^nna to retain a perfect top posi-
next Monday night at 8 o clock at league standing,
the armory, according to John H.
Hunter, captain and commanding of
ficcr of the local unit. An interested
crowd of citizens responded to Cap
tain Hunter’s first call last Monday
night at the armory, and it was the
opinion of all present that at least
100 men would be present at the or
ganization meeting. *
In a brief .'Statement of the work
of the "Home Guard." Captain Hun
ter pointeci out that the unit was be
ing formed to replace the local bat
tery now in camp at Camp Stewart, |
but that the Home "Guard would be
subject to call only by the governor
of South Carolina, and would be
formed principally to serve in case
of riot, insurrection, fire, and flood.
Attention was also called to the
fact that service in the S. C. Defense
force would probably have no bear
ing whatsoever on the status of any
man who is regi.stered for call under
the Selective Service act. The men
who are specially urged to join the
new group are men who have de
pendents, and who must keep jobs,
but who need basic military training.
The Second Regiment is entirely an
infantry organization.
Plans were discussed for time of
meeting, and that was deferred until
next week. All meetings will be held
in the armory.
