ed Senator James F. Byrnes of South
Carolina to succeed James C. Mc-
Reynolds as an associate justice of
the supreme court.
Mr. Roosevelt said yesterday he
had selected an appointee, but added
that the name would not be an
nounced for many ^eeks. McRey-

when asked whether the nomination
would be delayed until after con
gress acts on his aid-to-Britain leg
islation.
Senator Byrnes has been designat
ed one of tbe floor managers for the
bill and senate informants said that
announcement of his appointment to
the supreme court would be with
held until the measure had been dis
posed of.
Senator Byrnes himself was un
communicative, but it was reported
reliably that he was receptive to a
court appointment. Senators Barkley
(Democrat, of Kentucky), the ma
jority leader; Glass (D^ocrat, of
Virginia), and Harrison (Democrat,
of Mississippi), called at the White
House earlier this week to urge
Byrnes’ appointment. All are key
figures in th^ senate, and Mr, Roose
velt was said to have decided defi
nitely on Byrnes after conferring

of the Junior Orders United Ameri
can Mechanics will hold their first
meeting Monday evening at 8 o’clock
in the Masonic Temple building.
The meeting is preparatory to ah
initiation meeting to be held next
week at which time Richland Coun
cil, of Columbia will bring their de
gree team to put on the work. The

council at Laurens will hold a joint
meeting with the Clinton council
here at this time, and a barbecue
supper will be served.

of this county to make an effort to
supply their farm needs with food
and feed. Under present conditions,
Cannon pointed out, farmers must
realize that imder present economic
conditions, foreign markets Urt' itot
to be depended on, and it is neces
sary to produce their farm needs in
order to meet their financial obliga
tions and for a better standard of
living.
At the same hour and date
throughout South Carolina eadi

rens meeting. A farm survey made
last spring on 4755 Laurens county
farms showed 21 per cent planting
no com, 50 per cent no wheat, 28
per cent no vegetables, 42 per cent
no sweet potatoes, 55 per cent no
Irish potatoes, 85 per cent no syrup,
33 per cent no hogs, 43 per cent no
milk cows, 29 per cent no pouKry,

Captain. Daniel A. J. Sullivan, 56,
son of Mrs. Ella Sullivan Warren of
this city, died Monday at noon in
New York. Captain Sullivan was an
employee of the United States gov
ernment in the naval department and
was the possessor of a Congressional
medal awarded for imusual bravery
during the World War. He is sur
vived by his wife the former Miss
Eva Tilton of Maine. Burial will be
in Arlington national cemetery. —
