On Wednesday night Mr. and BIrs.
Manganese corporation has, a ca
pacity of onjy 100,obo tons a year
of ferro-grade manganese, Sf 'about
one-tenth of expected rearmament
requirements.'
With manganese shipments from
Russia, India arid Africa shut off by
war and those from Eouth America
threatened, the search for domestic
sources is intense. Plenty of 16^-
grade deposits have been found, but
few suitable for high-grade steel
making. The bugeau of mines is
spending two million dollars in the
hunt. One big copper mining com
pany is developing a method of re-
hning American ore. But we still are
short of manganese.
TIN—Vital
Tin is another metal which we
don’t produce but have to have, not
only for containers but as an alloy
for use with other metals in making
many important parts of military
madiines. The alloy of tin and cop-’
per, which we call bronze, is the old
est of all alloys. When the ancient
Carthagenians ventured to sail their
ships to England, they found the na
tive Britons mining tfffTH" Corn watt,
and became rich bringing it back to
sell to Rome.
Bronze swords, arrowheads and
shields were the first effective wea
pons of war. ’They were far superior
to' the stone weapons"of' the primi
tive tribes, and enabled peoples
which had them to become great
nations. After a while other peoples
found out how to melt iron and
the bronze age passed into history.
And Rome exterminated Carthage.
We get little tin from the British
mines now. Most of our supply
comes from the Malay peninsular
and Bolivia, a long sea voyage in
each case. But new methods of re
claiming tin from old cans, and a
still newer method of mgking tin
less food containers,, promise relief
in time from the present critical
shortage of tin.
