WORK
The wise ones who believe democ
racy won't work, would profit b'y a
study of history—-as far back as it
goes—and by a careful analysis of
theit newspapers. History would
teach them that democracy has been
working—with time out for rest oc
casionally—for a couple or thousand
years on so, and has been gaining
headway rapidly in the last couple
of hundred years. A careful analysis
of their newspapers—with a few dis
mal exceptions — will inform them
that this big, loose jointed giant over
here, which we call democracy, Is
beginning to coordinate his muscles
for an effort which a free man sys
tem can “put over" more successful
ly than can any other .system.
It i.sn’t the form of government
which causes decay in a nation; it
is the spirit of the people. If a nation
is rich and prosperous over a long
period of time, its citizens can be
compared to the rich man’s grand-
sans—soft and fat. How few of these
wse to the top. But the poor man’s
.'on must work. He is lean and strong,
and when opportunity knocks he
grasps it. He is the man you find at
tively, A nation of people becomes
soft and fat, or lean and hungry. His
tory shows that it doesn’t make much
difference what sort of government
these nations have. The strong and
hungry nation tries to grab what the
soft and fat one has, and is very, apt
taxpayers like that too). Ten percent
additional on income taxes. (And the
taxpayers ask for more). Later heads
inform the country that there will be
no bottlenecks in their department.
The farm sentiment must of neces
sity come in more slowly, but every
one knows ^vhat that will be. It has
been the same since Bunker Hill).
Congress gives up all idea of ad
journing, even during a convention
summer. Congress rushes all defense
measures. Iptense ccmcentration ev-
