In 1939 alone, operating expenses amounted to approximately fifty-five million dollars, not including additional millions^ used for new construction. To build, operate and maintain this system requires more than twenty-one thou sand skilled workers whose annual payroll ia approxi mately thirty million dollars. These telephone man and women contribute to the busi ness and social welfare of their communities, and of the South. They and dieir families compose a group of perhaps eighty thousand peo ple who are (dependent on this business for their live lihood. As a tax-payer, the South ern Bell does much toward the support of the local, state and national governments.
