the treasurer may direct for the pur»
pose of permanent road Improvement.
Fee System Abolish^
. Final disposition of the county sal
ary fee system question, at least for
one year, was contained in a new sec
tion add^ in the senate. TTie section
provided that the salaries of various
county officers as contained in the
regular salary section, except those of
magistrates and constables, Shall be in
lieu of all fees and costs c^leste^d or
accrued prior to April 1, 1936. The
officers so affected and the salaries
of each are: Sheriff $2,000, an increase
of $200 over the hou.se bill; Clerk of
Court, $1,800, plus $100 •■added in the
senate bjll; Judge of Probate $1,600,
an increase lof $300 over the house
bill; Auditor and Treasurer $687.85
each, representing the third of their
salaries paid by the county.
The salary of the assistant to the
clerk of court was increased in the
senate bill from $720 to $1,080, and
the four deputy sheriffs were increas
ed by $10 a month, making a total of
$110 a month for each. The assistant
to the county superintendent of educa
tion was also increased from $720 lo
$840 yearly.

Section 16 of the bill provided for
a loan in Hunter SchO|ol District No.
5 “to complete the present school term
of nine months” if such a loan be ne-
purpote of permanent road improve
ment in*Laurens county. Provided,

white teachers only.
Taxes Returned
The county treasurer was author
ized to remit overpaid taxes to the fol
lowing: Mrs. Allie E. Turner, Cross
Hill, $ll29; A Mason Hill, $40.91; and
Miss,. Ella Bellr $147.84. -
Other sections were as follows:

to obtain security for county funds;

of past due claims;

in floaing indebtedness;
Section 13, applying gasoline tax
surplus to payment of machinery
notes.
Section 16:—The treasurer of Lau
rens county is hereby authorized and
directed to borrow a sum of money
sufficient to pay-the 'white teachers
of Hunter school district No. 5 of
Laurens-county, if the ^»ame be nec
essary to complete the present school
term of nine months. TTie full faith,
credit and taxing power of said Hun
ter school district NOi 6 is hereby!

compensation of all members was four

I knew that this annual pay of four
hundred ($400.00) dollars was calcu
late so that each member should re
ceive ten dollars a day for fwty days,
because the constitution says,
