of some observers.
In the senate, which has been f-he

hearings are going to be ended by the

commerce committee opens short
hearings, tomorrow on the Rayburn-
Wheeler utility holding company mea
sure; the banking committee is to
consider the‘omnibus banking mea
sure, the motor vehicle ' reguulation
measure and the amendments streng
thening the AAA are to be submitted
for action.
House Democratic leaders intend to
(ihs^se of 'the administration’s^ social
security bill probably by the end of
the week; to expedite action on the
banking bill; prepare for re-enact
ment of $416,000,000 of nuisance tax-
e.s, and to formulate a merchant ma
rine ship subsidy bill. 'The Rayburn
utility hearings are to be concludetf
tomorrow and that measure is the
next administration bill slated for
hou.se action.
After disposing of the long delayed
work relief measure, congress in the
past week, quickly concluded action
on the r.:!.ninisLration proposal to in
crease io~ $3,750,000,000 the capital
of the home owners loan cor|)oration.
Meanwhile, some obstacles to the
administration’s .program have, been
moved, altheugji many remain. House
Democratic leaders now are confident
of ^tilling off the' Townsend old age
pension plan, since it has been revised
by it^ proponents; the president’s in
crease in the price of silver last week
an agreement on it/with leaders pi the
bonus drive. / ‘
Harrison’s announcement followed
his conference on the bdnus question
with President Roo8g;velt only yester
day in which sm&ny the proposals
for dealing with the question werej
canvassed. The committee chairman
carried to the White House half a do
zen proposals on the problem whicHf*
has perplexed this and other adminis-rj
trations. -
While the canny Mississippian
would not disclose the nature of his
bill, it was reported to be a.cbmbipa-
tk)n of a number of other measures
which have been offered as substi
tutes for the Patman bill, based pri
marily on the idea of advancing the
maturity <hite of the adjusted servi
certificates to 1938.
It was understood, also, that the ad
ministration measure would propose
giving veterans negotiable bonds up
■to current value of their certificates,
which they could either cash or retain
until maturity in 1938 to obtain the
full face value of their certificates.

Mississippi Senator Says.
Washington, April 15.—A compro
mise aoldiera’s bonus bill—labeled by
its author as acceptable to President
Roosevelt—wa.s drafted tonight in an
effort to head off the powerful -drive
for the inflationary Patman bilF pass
ed by the House.
Chairman Harrison of the Senile
Finance Committee announced he
probably would introduce the bill to
morrow. While the measure was be
ing prepared, he sought to work out

as a day of prayer, a citizens prayer
service will be held here Friday at 12
o’clock noon in the Casino theatre
building. The service is to be in
charge of local ministers and will last
thirty minutes, with an invitation ex
tended all church people of the com
munity to be present.
Mayor P. S. Bailey yesterday gave
'his eihiorsement to the period of
prayer set for Friday and called upon
the people to enter^into its observance.
