tion,, it was said, arose not so much
from the situation in Berlin where
real hank runs did not develop al
though the withdrawals were heavy
and the hanks paid only a percentage
of deposits, but out of what was said
to be a much more serious outlook in
the Rhineland, where runs developed
quickly and authorities without wait
ing for the president to act announced
that municipal savings banks would be
closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
These drastic measures occupied the
government while it was anxiously
