Within the next three weeks the
I Irtigest umeunt of cash newly put into'
circulation at one time will find its
way into the tills of merchants all
.over the country. That is the annual'
'distribution of the Christmas clubs,
'maintained by 8,000 banks. Eleven j
I million pers9ns have been depositing;
1 small amounts every week since the
first of the year, in order to accumu
late a fund for Christmas buying. The j
average in these Christmas accounts!
is $56.40 this year, hut the grand to- i
tal runs to six hundred and-^welve!
jnillion dollars. j
Not all of the money will be spent'
for Christmas presents. Some will go
into permanent savings and invest
ments, some to pay off debts incurred
during the year, some for other pur
poses. About a third will be spent for
gifts; but all of the six hundred mil
lion will change hands, and it is money
changing hands that makes ousiness,
goed. The faster it'changes hands, the]
better business is.
The stimulus of this immense sum
starting to circulate ahould go a long
way toward restoring’prosperity.
