For a number of years, even up to
Clinton is an antebellum town and
came into exisitence upon the building
of the old Laurens railroad in the
year 1852. The town is located on a
high ridge 800 feet above sea level,
and about midway between the waters
of the LiOtle' river, on the south, and
Enoree, on the north, and within 9
miles of the city of Laurens, on west
and Newberry on the east. The ante
bellum history of the town, is in p&rt
unknown to the writer, except from
report, and that report is rather un
pleasant; it was noit of the very best.
In point of commercial importance.
Clinton had a fair rating and her mer
chants commanded an excellent pat
