county. Innumerable wreaths, cut
flowers and the wild flowers growing

to hold the funeral in the residence

were conducted on the front porch of
the home, with the hundreds crowding

A choir of mixed voices, standing
on the porch, shaded by centurian

Soul Shall Rest” died away the Rev.
Mr, West, local Baptist minister, read
portions of the scripture.
The Rev. A. F. Guyton .another lo
cal pastor, followed and asked that
“peace come to all men.”
“I*’fe is everlasting,” began Rev.
Mr. Clarke, and then he quoted a line
that had once been said of .Senator
Ben Tillman—“He’s just around the
bend in the road; he’s not dead, he’s
just sleeping.”
As the last words of “Beautiful Isle
of Somewhere” floated out over the
huge crowd and on into the woods that
Senator Dennis knew so well, most of
the crowd retired to the roadway to
allow immediate members of the fam
ily a last few minutes with husband
and father and brother. 'Then, before
the casket was removed, the line that!
had been unending all day, again be-1
gan to file through the house for their:

As the casket was beinjS; taken out
a side door a long line of honorary j
pallbearers, including state senators,
and other high officials, formed in
lines banking either side of the drive
way. Just as the casket began to sink
into the grave the Rev. Mr. Clarke
asked that “May we trust in Thee for
final vindication.”
The choir sang “Asleep in Jesus,”
flowers were banked overflowing on
the grave, and the service was con
cluded. ^
The assassniatiw^ Senatojh^
nis was perhaps the Most sehsational
in all of Berkeley’s violent record. He
was known as the county’s political
boss, and ^as known to have had the
hatred of a number of persons in the
county. He was the fifth .South Caro
lina state senator to go to a violent
death in recent months.

Sabb Cumbee was severely wounded,
and his son, Legrande Cuumbee, was
killed when they were fired upon from
ambush as they rode toward their
home through “Hell Hole^’ swamp.
Some weeks later Glenn McKnight
was seriously wounded one night as
he was making his way from his gar
age to the rear door of his home in
Moncks Comer. Three men were killed
in a bloody battle at Moncks Corner
some years ago.
Tonight more than 15 states con
stables and policemen remained in
Berkeley county because of uneasiness
of citizens who fei^ed that Senator
Dennis’s recent words that if he were
killed, a half dozen more would die
before nightfall, might yet come true.
All was seemingly quiet, however.
Active pallbearers were J. McKewn
Williams, S. N. Rourk, J. D. Meyers,
Charles A. Jones, D. L. Bradwell and
J. P. Cross. "
Gov. John G. Richards, Invited to
act as an honorary pallbearer, was un
able to be present because of engage
ments he could not break.
W. L. (.Sporty) Thornley, accused of
the killing by eyewitnesses, is in the
state penitentiary at Columbia, where
he denied he did the shooting. He has
been placed under observation by (Jov.
Richards to determine whether or not
he is sane.
The senator is survived by his wid
ow, seven children, two brothers and
two sisters, all of Berkeley county.
