there will be farmers in Laurens coun
ty who will not pay any attention to
the destruction of cotton stalks in the
fall. On the other jiand there are
farmers who are destroying stalks as
fast as harvesting is completed. While
in my office this morning W. H. Lea-
man of Cross Hill, stated that he is
destroying his stalks as fast as cotton
is picked. You no doubt have seen
quite a bit in the papers of the de
struction of cotton stalks in the lower
part of the state. It is of advantage
in the Piedmont to do likewise. In ex
amining several fields in the county
the past week or ten days, I find the
weevil enterimr the cotton seed. Farm
ers report to me a high percentage of
weevils in their cotton seed after gin
ning. This is an ideal place for hiber
nation during the winter. We have a
good infestation of weevils through
this county ready to hibernate through
the winter. Taking Ijiurens county as
a whole the v sevil came too late for
much damage to this year’s crop, but
under favorable conditions we are
bound for infestation early next
spring, due to the dry weather we had
this year, and we have no assurance
.... ish to find work in another.

In Los Angeles last week, Max S.
Hayes, farmer-labor candidate for
vice-president in 1920, told the Amer
ican Federation of Labor it ought to
start a labor party in 1928.
President Green, of the Federation,
knows that failure is no good adver
tisement. and will not advise a step
that would mean a miserably poor
showing and hurt the prestige of or
ganized labor. Union men know that
one of two candidates will win, the
1928 election, and they will reserve the
right to vote for the one they consider
the better man.
