HTU8SDAY,
WILES STEPS OUT
FREE MAN AGAIN
Jury Reaches Verdict In Early Morn
ing:. Fights Women Off Who
Wanted To Talk With Him.
Durham, N. C., Oct. 17.—Robert H.
Wiles today stepped out of the Dur
ham county court house a free man.
After deliberating for a day and night
a verdict of “not guilty” of the murder
'of Ralph Gordon was reached this
morning n little before 7 o’clock, and
a half hour bter Judge Henry A.
Grady called upon the jury for its
verdict.
Only four spectators were; present
when the verdict was reported to the
judge, but soon afterwards the news
became generally known and crowds
■ gathered about the court house to
discuss the outcome, to try to get a
glimpse of Wiles. Disappointment
was expressed by some that they were
not present when the verdict was an
nounced after they had sat through
the trial from the beginning *and
waited three hours «i a dairkened court
room last night hoping for a decision
tc be reached. That the verdict met
with popular approval on the part of
local citizens was easy to see for
many were the expressions of pleas
ure heard on the streets. In- fact,
throughout the trial public sentiment
Was with Wiles and had a different
verdict been reached it would undoubt
edly have been a very displeasing
one. 4
For the first time since his trial be
gan Wiles showed extreme nervous
ness this morning when the jailer
went into thfe jail to escort him to
the court room for the announcement
of the verdict of the jury. He had
difficulty in .finding his clothea which
for Columbia. He is due to arrive in
the South Carolina capitol around
noon Monday. -
When Wiles stepped out of the court
house for the first time'since he was
had been placed by him the night j placed under arrest August 8, he was
before in a comer of the room and he
also had trouble in dressing. Through
out the trial- he had maintained a
calm air and when it came his turn
to take the witness stand, he made
an excellent witness.
“Have you reached" a verdict?”
Judge Grady asleep when the jury had
filed into the court room and seated
itself. “We have,” J. A. Leake, to
bacco warehouseman of Alamance
county, foreman of the jury, replied.
“What is your verdict?” the judge
then asked. “Not guilty,” was the
reply. The judge then inquired
whether the verdict meant not guilty
of an£ charge and the reply was that
immediately/surrounded by a number
of women who were eager to see him
and talk with him. It was with diffi
culty that he succeeded in getting
away from them.
The trial of Wiles, it was learned
this afternoon, cost Durham county
approximately $1,000, including the
costs of bringing in the 100 men who
constituted the special venire from Al
amance county, their upkeep while
here and expenses for their return
home. The jury left immediately af-
terjt had been discharged this morn
ing.
STATEMENT
the defendant was found not guilty of Of the Ownership, Management, etc.,
any charge.
Following the verdict Wiles was re
turned to jail from where he was later
summoned before the court. Upon
his arrival in the court room the
judge called for the next case to come
up for trial and Solicitor McLendon;
after declaring hik surprise over the
verdict, said the next case was against
Wiles. At the advice of the solicitor,
who declared that the trial for mur
der of Gordon had been a great ex
pense to the county^ a nolle prosse
was granted in the charge of the mur
der of Mrs. Dora Wiles, wife of the
defendant, and the defendant' was
declared free to go his way. Wiles
left this afternoon at 4:30 for Raleigh,
where he will tomorrow catch a train
