BRYAN SAYS TRIAL SHOWS
CONSPIRACY AGAINST BIBLE
Claims Plot Has Been Uncovered at Dayton.
Flaiys DarrOw and All Asrnostics for Anti-
Christianity Theory.
Tenn.
Dayton, Tenn., July 18.—William
Jenningrs Bryan today in a statement,
declared that the Tennessee evolution
case has uncovered a conspiracy
against the B : bie an<J Christianity.
Declaring that multitudes have been
deceived by the us? of the term “evo
lution,” he added that their eyes are
now being opened. Evolution, as
taught by scientists, he said, is an
imaginary process, wholly unproven
that begins with life does not attempt
to explain life. —r—————
“If the evolutionary hypothesis is
true,” he said, “man has come up
through the animals below him by a
cruel law under which the strong kill
off the weak.” }
“The evolutionists bring their doc
trine before the public in a jeweled
case and praise it as if it were a
sacred thing. They do not exhibit, as
Darwin did, its bloody purpose; they
do not boast that barbarism is its
mly true expression; they do not tell
e public that Darwin, who studied
for the ministry and in his youth be
lieved in a personal God and in ‘the
strict and literal truth of every word
in the Bible,’ was led away from
Christianity by evolution and died an
agnostic. ■ .
“The evolutionists have not been
honest with the public, even ministers
who believe in evolution have assured
their congregations that there is no
inconsistency between Darwinism and
Christianity. The ministers, should
lution robs the individual of a sense
of responsibility to God and paralyzes
the doctrine of brotherly love.
“Mr. Darrow shouts that truth is
being excluded from the jury, merely
because a few so-called ‘experts’
whom he has selected are not per-
leads logically to agnosticism
“But this trial has had another im-
mitted to put their prejudiced opinions
up against the honest convictions of
the people of Tennessee. The experts
are selected i>y him and his associates
they do not represent unbiased sci
ence. Even the so-called ‘Bible ex
perts’ whom he wanted to call were
selected by Mr^ Darrow and his asso-
ciat -.s. From Mr. Darrow’s point of
view, no Christian would be worthy
to be called an expert on. the Bible
until after scientists, also selected by
him, had performed a surgical opera
tion on these Bible experts and remov
ed from them faith in the Bible as the
revealed word of God.
“The Christian world is not going
to give up its belief in God or its
belief in the Bible as our only stand
ard of morals, or in Christ as our
only Saviour .and wisest guide—the
Christian world will not give up these
sacred things at the demand of those
intolerant champions—not of science,
but of an unproven guess—the logical
tendency of which is to rob man oi
his moral standards in this world and
of hope of immortal life in the work,
to come.

First, we are indebted to Mr. Scopes,

He protested against the opening of
court with prayer and has lost no
opportunity to slur the intelligence of
those who believe ih orthodox Christ
ianity and to hurl the charge of tyg-
otry against every one who objects to
the teaching of evolution^ in the
schools. Mr. Darrow, in the celebrat
ed Loeb-Leopold trial, boldly argued
that the boys were not responsible for
what they did, laying the blame upon
their ancestors and their environment
and releiving them of all personality
of power to decide between good and
evil.
“Mr. Dkrrow’s connection with this

“Mr. Darrow’s hostility to Christ

him to explain to their Christian
brothers why they >defend a doctrine
that strikes at the root not only of
Christianity, but of civilization. Do
they know what evolution means? If
do they prefer it to the Bible?

I. The Controversy in thp Church
at Antioch (tv. 1-5).
This difficulty was a most serious
one for it threatened the disruption oi
the church into a Jewish and a Gentile
division. It was not a questlop of the
admission of the Gentiles info the
church. That had been settled some
years before when Peter received Cor
nelius and his household. The ques
tion now was, on what ground could
they be received? Should Gentile con
verts bejrequired to keep the Mosaic
law as a Vendition of salvatitffT? This
issue was brought on by the coming of
certain men from Jerusalem, who de
clared, “Except ye be circumcised
after the manner of Moses, ye cannot
be saved (v. 1).’’ The question was so
difficult that Paul and Barnabas were
unable to put the men to silence.

of the Scripture on th/elr side. They
could point to tiie command in which
this was enjoined upon believers
(Gen. 17:14). Paul could not point to
any Scripture where it had been abro
gated. If Paul could plead that Abra

Jerusalem they rehearsed the tilings
which God had done for them*.
II. The Deliberations of the Coun-
cil_(vv. 6-21).
1» Peter’s Speech (vv. 6-11).
He argued that Gbd had borne wit
ness to His acceptance of the Gentiles
by giving the Holy Spirit to them as
unto the Jews (Acts 10:34-47). Since,
therefore, God had not made a differ^
ence It would be folly for them to do
so.
2. Paul and Barnabas Rehearsed
Their Experience (v. 12).
They toId"how God had set his seal
of approval on their preaching of sal
vation by grace through faith, apart
from works, by the working of signs
and wonders through them.
3. The Argument of James (w.
14-21).
He took the declaration of Peter and
showed how it harmonized with the
prophecy of Amos (Amos 9:11-15).
He showed that the .reception of the
Gentiles was not in conflict with God's
plan, bu't in strict harmony (herewith.
As set forth by James, God’s plan Is
asstollows:
(1) To take ont from among the
Gentiles a people for His name (v.
,14J. This is what is now going on—
tfie preaching of the gospel to the ends
of the earth, and the calling out of the
church.

and removed, the Hebrew nation will
be converted and restored to its own
land and privileges by the Lord Him
self at His return (vv. 16-17).
(3) Following this will be the con
version of the world through the
agency of converted Israel (v. I7, ct
Rom. 11:15). He showed that there
ia no conflict when the Scriptures are
rightly divided.
His Judgment was that the Gentilea
should not be troubled with things that
are Jewish, but should be warned
against the perils of heathenism, such
as meat offered to idols, fomlcation
.and blood. ,
III. Tha Decision (vv. 22-29).
The Mother church came to unan
imous agreement and accepted the res
olution offered by .Tames. The apos
tles and elders not only sent a letter
stating the decision of the conference,
but took the wise precaution to said
Influential men along with Paul and
Barnabas to bear the same testimony
by word of mduth. The letter denied
the authority of .the Judalsing teach
ers (v. 24). and stated the method by
which this decision had been reached
(w. 25-27). They put the Holy Spirit

The church was called together to
hear the report. Its reading brought
rejoicing. Tho.f were now free to
