Admiral McGowan’s father, Captain
. Homer L. McGowan, was a Confeder-
ate soldier and after the war edited
for some time the Laurensville Her
ald; Admiral McGowan a few years
ago delivered the Memorial oration
here, surrounded by the- rows of beau
tiful blooming rose bushes, which un
der his~supervision had been trans
planted into the Laurens cemetery.
He likes the newspaper game and is
a versatile writer. He is a devotee of
athletics and is especially fond of
football and baseball. He is descend-
' ed on both sides, from forbears promi
nent in th^» legal profession hnd he is
a lawyer himself.
Because of his eminent record with
the navy—a record that in some re
spects, it has been officially stated,
surpasses in efficiency any previous
handling of the financial side of the
* department, Laurens feels special
pride in his selection as Chief high
way-commissioner. As one citizen ex
pressed it today, “McGowan is to fit
into a situation that calls for his type
of administrative ability.”
