Just how far the election of von

GERMANY ELECTS
YON HINDENBURG
Old Field Marshal First President
Named By- Popular Vote.
Plurality of 850^000.
Berlin, April 27.—The people of
Germany have rallied to the banner of
Field Marshal von Hindenburg and
elected him president of the republic.
He is the first president of Germany
to be elected by popular ballot. He
was nominated by the National-Con
servative bloc to replace Dr. Karl Jar-
res, who failed of election in the first
balloting March 29. His opponent was
Dr. Wilhelm Marx, candidate of the
Republican bloc, adherents of the Wei
mar coalition, composed of Centirists,
Socialists and Democrats. The third
candidate was Ernst Thaelmann, Com
munist.
Van Hindenburg triumphed in his
race for the presidency with a plural
ity close to $45,000 votes. The unoffi
cial final figures are: Von Hinden
burg, 14,639,000; Marx, 13,740,000;
Thaelmann, 1,789,000.
Von Hindenburg comes to the chair
once occupied by Friedrich Ebert, who
was chosen president by the national
assembly at Weimar in February,
1919, and who died in Berlin Febru
ary, 1925.
i An advance analysis of the vote in
dicates* that von Hindenburg scored
heavily in East Prussia and other
agrarian areas, polling 2,900,000 more
votes in these sections than did Dr.
Jarres in the March election, while
Dr. Marx gained only 500,000 more
‘votes than polled by the three re
publican parties on that occasion.
J It was the flat country and new
'voters that aided the field marshal to
office. ‘ ^
i The streets of Berlin were almost
deserted when the final results were
made known, an all day drizzling rain
having kept the customary election
'crowds indoors. The voting through
out Greater Berlin proceeded in an
orderly fashion despite the heat of the
recent campaign, and the size of the
vote recorded throughout Germany is
taken as evidence that the mass of
the voters had pretty well made up
their minds in advance.
Among the features were the heavy
vote polled by Dr. Marx in the Rhine
land and his showing in Bavaria.
These advantages, however, were not
1 sufficient to enable him to overcome
the defection of the Socialists in Sax-
' ony, where he failed to obtain the
party’s former vote. In Schleswig von
Hindenburg gained 100,000 new votes,
while the People’s bloc succeeded only
in holding its vote of March 29.
The result vindicates the prediction
made by von Hindenburg’s campaign
managers, who banked on their ability
to mobolize the stay-at-home vote and
also on dissenters in the ranks of ih'
Democratic and Centre parties. ,The
People’s party-suppoited the National
ist candidate despite the prediction
that Dr* Marx would receive the active
support of the Catholic electroate of
Bavaria.
No matter how the figures are in
terpreted the outstanding accomplish-
mertt of this election demonstrates the
drawing power of von Hindenburg’s
mune, which aided so materially in
bringing nearly four million more
voters to the polls than a month ago
and which primarily appealed to the
sentiment of German mothers.
Opposing this post-war recrudesc
ence of a militant nationalist, was a
: candidate proposed by a coallition of
’ the three republican parties, which
from its conception failed to' suggest
I a firmly coordinated political group.
! Dr. Marx failed to enthuse the rank
and file of Social-Democracy and kin
dled only lukewarm campaign enthus
iasm in the ranks of the Democratic
party, which became only an unwill-
| ing partner in the so-called Weimar
groups.
