Scientists studied the earth’s mag

eclipse. Every ship’s captain noticed
that the eclipse had an effect on the
compass. Science does not know why.
Possibly some scientists got from
this eclipse the most important infor
mation of all, which has to do with
the amount of radium in the sun.
The sun’s length of life and the
lives of this and other planets de
pend on the sun’s radio-active force.

Bishop the Right Reverend William
Montgomery Brown, of Cleveland, is
put out of the church. Accused of
being unorthodox, he protested, “I
believe in God.” But that was not
enough, and he is out.
Bishop Brown’s exact description of
God in which he believes would be
interesting. One small boy, asked to
describe God, replied instantly: ‘‘He’s
got a long white beard, and high-top
boots.” That was perfectly respect
ful. It described the boy’s highest
ideal.

Many human beings imagine a God,
somewhat as that little boy imagined
him, with a beard that might need
trimming, boots to be mended, etc.
WhaT is the Right Reverend Bishop’s
idea of a Supreme Being managing
such a universe as this, with time and
space unlimited, millions of suns and
planets, constant change everywhere,
with everything whirling and flying
around and nowhere any comfortable
stability ?
Can any human mind really have
any but a childish conception of such
a being 7 \
Our navy heads might give the
country information on a statement
recently published by English papers.
The British have arranged their ships
so that they can take in water bal-
by making the ship tip over, raise the
guns to the desired elevation and in
crease their range without actually
changing the mechanical adjustment
of the guns
That seems to be highly ingenious,
but of course, we can’t do it in this
country because probably somebody in
Europe would object.
t. Hia Prayer for Himself (vv. 1-5).
Fully conscious that the hour of His
crucifixion was at hand He prayed
to the Father saying, “Glorify thy Son,
that thy Son also may glorify lyhee.”
His coming Into the world had as its
Supreme mission the glorification of
the Father. In order that the Father
:ht be glorified It was necessary
the Shn should be'glorified.
L To Him Had Been Given the Pow
er to Give Eternal Life, to God’s
Chosen Ones (vv. 2, 81). Eternal life
is knowledge of and a right relation
to the true God and Jesus Christ.
Thus we see that eternal life Is a re
lationship and not an entity.
2. He Declared That He Had Fin
ished the Work Committed Unto Him
(v. 4). The definite work which He
came to do was to give eternal life to
the chosen of God.
II. His Prayer for Hia Immedlata
Disciples (vv. 6-19).
1. Their Preservation (vv. 9-10). He
did not pray that they would be taken
out of the world but that they might
be kept from the Evil One. It Is not
the divine will thrt we go to heaven
at once when we believe because:
(1) Christ needs our ministry.
Those who have been made partakers
of the divine life are His represents-
tives in the world.
(2) We need His grace strength
ened and developed In us. Heaven is
a prepared place and only those who
have been prepared for it can be ad
mitted Into it.
(3) The world needs us. Christ de
clares that the disciples are the light
of the world, the salt bf the earth
(Matt. 5:16). Only as the light of
the Lord shines forth through the dis
ciples can the people In the world find
their way.
2. Their Sanctification (w. 17-19).
(1) Sanctify means: First, to set
apart; that means then that the dis
ciples were to be set apart to do the
gCh
second, to cleanse; those who are’ set

A great surety company advertises
$100,000 regard for the return of a
million dollar’s worth of bonds stolen.
It says it will pay ten per cent of
the face value of any bond stolen,
whenever it is obliged to make good*
insurance on such bonds.
That’s interesting news to bond
bandits and holdup men. It stabilizes
their industry. It guarantees them
$100,000 of good safe cash on a mil
lion dollar bond robbery. But what
about the laws against compounding
felony ?
It is proposed to create an ‘‘air
port” for New York by roofing over
the yards of Pennsylvania railroad.
Temporary landing and leaving places
for fliers might thus be provided in
many cities. That ought to he done.
Automobile roads, without grade
crossings, could he easily provided,
making a roadway above railroad
tracks, running out through city su
burbs. Railroads should be properly
compensated, of course.
Makeshift airports will soon be out
grown, however. Before you die, in
every big city, the week-end will see
thousands of flying “club cars,” each
with its load of passengers, flying off
to mountains, or seaside, in summer;
to Florida, California, etc., in winter.
The Philadelphia Mint begins coin
ing 5,000,000 half-dollar coins to
commemorate the courage of General
Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and
others, and the carving of the great
memorial on Stone Mountain, near
Atlanta.
These coins have a meaning even
more important than their meaning
as memorials of courage and artistic
enterprise. They establish even more
firmly the fact that the Civil War be
longs to an age that is past. And
they will be prized in the North even
more highly than in the South.

apart as His representatives need the

(2) The instrument used (v. 17).
They were to be sanctified through
God’s truth. God’s truth Is His Word.
(8) The purpose (v. 18). They
were sanctified In order that they
might be qualified for His service In
the world.
(4) Jesus’ own sanctification was for
that purpose (v. 19). He is the grand
example.
III. His Prayer for His Future Die-
clplee (vv. 20-26).
L Their Unifiestlpp (vv. 20-23). His
great concern was that all believers
should be united.
(1) The grand pattern of this spir
itual union Is the union that exists
between the Father and the Son (v.
21).
(2) The incentive making possible
^his union (v. 22). The vision of the
glory of God In Christ (II Cos. 8:18)
Is the grand Incentive which unites
the believers.
(8) The purpose (v. 28). The su
preme objective in the unification of
the believers is to convince the world
that God sent Jesus Christ to save It
2. Their Glorification (w. 24-26).
The disciple of Christ enjoys fellow
ship with the Father and the Son and
fellowship with his fellow believer,
but he also looks forward to tbo
time when he shall be glorified.
(1) “I will that they be with Me
where I em" (v. 24). There Is a pres
ent glory enjoyed by believers.
(a) They are now children of God,
although It dpes not yet appear what
they shall be.
(b) They now possess eternal life
and therefore shall never perish.
While there is the present glory, Jesus
wants His disciples to be with Him
In Heaven. He said, “Except a grain
of wheat fall into the ground and die.
It abldeth alose." We can reverently
say that unlHM the believer Is taken
to Heaven Christ will be lonely.
(2) “Behold my glory” (v. 24). The
believer shall share the Ineffable glory
of Christ (I John 3:1-8).
