Cleveland, July 8.—The Socialist party late today officially condemn ed the Ku Klux Klan by name after sharpest debate in the national con vention that has been meeting here for three days. At each door two men in white robes , and hoods, who admitted the bearers of the cards. A young man, whose name was not announced, introduced the Rev. E. M. Lightfoot of Columbia, a Baptist was not concerned and that a pronounce ment covering only the party’s stand in opposition to attempts to divide th eworkers was better suited to a Socialist declaration. The substitute was defeated 19 to 53 and the resolution was then pass ed 56 to 16. GRAY. preacher and chairman of the Anti- Saloon league of South Carolina, who delivered an address in favor of the Ku Klux Klan. Dr. Lightfoot said that in his travels he had observed silent forces at work and learned tha^ it was the Ku Klux. In a territory in Horry, liquor selling and other law violations ' had been stopped by the klan. The klan is against the encroach ments of the Knights of Columbus and the Catholics, which in some places allow none but Catholics to hold .office. The klan emphasizes racial purity and true Americanism. The Catholics and Jews have a ma jority of the members of congress from New York. Infant think a man can be 100 per cent American and a Roman Catholic. They give too much allegiance to the pope. - Believe Cath olicism ia behind the effbrts for fed eral control of the schools. The klan stands “for restricted im migration, pure Americanism, racial purity, law enforcement and organi zation of the Protestants to offset the'organization of the Catholics and Jews.” At the close of his address, Dr. Lightfoot asked all who approved these principles to stand up without any obligation to join the klan. Half or more of the crowd stood up. Dr. Lightfoot said he was surprised that anybody should remain seated, as he had not anywhere else had any body who refused to approve these pkincipels. He then invited anybody who would join to sign the application to join the klan. He said the “donation” was $10.00 and ministers free. "by the debate, Morris Hilquit, New York, has passed an instruction to the executive committee to circulate a pamphlet setting forth the party’s detailed position on the subject. William H. Henry, Indiana, said his state was so permeated with the I Klan that condemnation of it by the j party would require a lot of legisla tion by Socialist organizers. The convention also passed resolu tions denouncing the Fascisti move ment in Italy and the assasination there of the Socialist, Deputy Mat- teotti. A doze nother declarations were passed, the avalanche of resolutions coming in place of a formal platform | which the party passed over yester day, when it endorsed the LaFollette candidacy and his platform. The convention selected a new na tional executive committee of seven and created the office of national chairman, naming Eugene V. Debs for the honor. It also 'selected a . special committee to visit the veteran leader of the party at Elmhurst, HI., and extend to him personally the af fectionate greetings of the delegates.
