Lodge Treesarer Gets Two Years For

Jary Presentment.
Laurens, June 14—While the Young
case was of chief interest at the term
of general sessions court held here
this week, the court disposed of a
considerable volume of criminal bus
iness, including three cases charging
murder, several alleging violations of
the prohibition law and other minor
charges of law breaking.
George Wolfe, negro, got five years
following his conviction of man
slaughter. John D. Miller, negro,
charged with absconding with about
$500 belonging to a local fraternal
order, of which he was treasurer,
pleaded guilty to the charge and was
given two years.
A case unique in the annals* of the
Laurens court was that of Richard
Walker, who is serving a term on the
county chaingang for housebreaking
and larceny. Recently Walker, who

Yet there is a question as to

There are many women earning a
living by hard work and long hours
with little pay; yet the profession of
nursing offers a fine salary after
three years of preparation during
which time the woman in training
receives her living expenses and a
small monthly payment.
'Most hospitals accept girls with
only high school education and there
is s great demand for more nurses.
There is no work in which one may
feel that she is contributing more to
humanity than in this calling.
The work is often hard, but many
times the nurse has pleasant sur
roundings and makes grateful friends.
A nurse just out of training re
ceives five dollars for twelve hours
duty and her living expenses, which
count up to much more per month
than the school teacher in even the
socalled best paid positions.
More of our girls seeking a life
work should turn to this profession.

Toronto.
Toronto, June 16.—Thousands of
Rotarians from 26 countries here to
attend the International Rotary con
vention which opens tomorrow, wit
nessed a historical pageant staged in
their honor St the Toronto exposition
grounds tonight. The pageant com
memorated more than a century of
peace between Canada and the United
States, calling special attention to
the 3,000 miles of unfortified bound
ary line.
By the time the first session be
gins at least 12,000 Rotarians will
have registered, it is expected. Hun
dreds arrived 'today by automobiles
from points as distant as Colorado
and California. Most of the South
American republics, .China, Japan,
Australia, New Zealand, and South
Africa, are represented. A luncheon
was given today by Lieutenant Gov
ernor Harry Cockshutt at the Ontario
government house to the Internation
al officers of Rotary. The event was
marked by an address of Guy Gun-
daker, international president, who
paid tribute to the hospitality shown
by Toronto.
