Washington, Feb. g.—The war de
partment today made an announce-
meot which is orgreat interest to the
relatives and friends of the men of the
Thirtieth Division. The division, it
was stated, was "given priority” on
January 23 1 , which means that orders
were Jssued giving the division prece
dence over the organization for im
mediate return to the fnited States.
It was further explained that judg
ing by what has been done in the past,
It should take from one month to six
weeks for a division to get back to
the United States after a "priority"
order has *been given. This should

Sonth Carolina Senator Hakes Speech
In Interest of Suffrage Cause.
* Washington. Feb. 5.—Strategy * of
opponents of equal suffrage was said
TO have prevented" a record vote hr-
dosement of the Susan D. Anthony
suffrage constitutional aifrendment
resolution at a conference tonight of
Democratic senators.
After more than two hours of de
bate, Senator Jones of New Mexico,
proposed indorsement of the constitu
tional amendment measure. Twenty
senators voted favorably but all of the
opponents refrained from voting and
Senator Martin, the Democratic lead
er. who presided, declared that the
resolution was not adopted because a
quorum was not present.
Before the vote on the Jones pro
posal a motion of opponents of the res
olution to adjourn 'was defeated, 23 to
27.
After adjournment, Senator Jones,
chairman of the woman suffrage com
mittee, said the conference action left

next Monday.
"When we came to final actioi^
said Senator Jones, “there was not a
majority of the conference present and
therefore no quorum with which to
act on the resolution. A large ma
jority of those present, however, were
in fovor of the re^plution.”
The politica! expediency of acting on
the sul^age amendment was the prin
cipal theme of debate, which t^as
marked by its vehemence. At times
senators spoke so loudly that their
voices reverberated through the thick
doors of the Conference room and
echoed through the corridors.
Advocates of the resolution, argued
that the fortunes of tbe Democratic
party would be aided by favorable ac
tion on the equarf suffrage ** question
and said if it was defeated future po
litical benefits would be received by
the Republican i»arty. Opponentss
were said to have contended that po
litical expediency should not be a fac
tor in so serious a natter as amending
the constitution.
The meeting, tho first held by the
Democratic senators during the -war,
broke up in a roar of hiugrter over the
ruling of Senator Martin on the point
of no quorum on the final vote.
It was announced that one more re
cruit for the suffrage resolution had
been gained in Senator Pollock of

Good Openings for Disabled Soldiers
*. Hade Competent by Special Train-
^ ing. Ready Demand for Such Men.
Washington, Feb. 12.—One of the
most popular occupations for which, j
disabled soldiers are being trained by
the federal boa^d for vocational edu
cation is that oflTOto mechanics, and
those who take and finish the course
have no difficulty in finding steady em
ployment- at remunerative wages.
There'are many opfortunitiee in the
motor industry; the calls for compe
tent men greatly exceed the supply,
and probably will continue to exceed
the number of available men fpr some
years af least.
Another development or cpecialized
branch of this training is that of the
-operation, care and repair of farm
tractors and farm machinery general
ly. This is affording boys who have'
been raised on the farms a chance to
become ‘specialists in a line which is
steadily growing, for all indications
are that the age of machinery and la
bor saving appliances on the farms i^
right at hand. Tractpr operators are
in-good demand, especially on the large
prairie wheat farms of the northwest 1 .
The federal board for vocational edu
cation at Washington Is anxious to
correspond with any disabled soldier
or sailors or members of, the families
of such men. Even If he has gone out
in civil life and attempted to make
his living without special training, afid
finds his handicaps too much for him,
he is still entitled to this special train
ing- by the government, absolutely free
and is given a support fund of $65 per
month while,he is in training, with Ihe
practical certainty of a position being
ready for him when he has finished
his course and is competent to take
on the work at a first class ealarV.
