THURSDAY, NOVKMBIftv is?. 1922.
In a court in one ot the large citiei
the other day a husband and his wife*
asked the Judge to arbitrute' a family
quarrel. The wife had asked that
the husband be arrested and he hud
made the customary reply?cussed a
little, perhaps a good deal. The
judge psked both ot them to sit with
iilm on the bench for an hour or so
and listen to the other cases that
came before him. They sat there silently,
hearing the troubles, problems
and unhappiness ot $ others-, saw ?u
much distresp that they were ashamed
arfd apologized to the judge lor
bothering him with tlielr petty dtlferences.
In telling the story a New
York weekly says "the best way to
get rid ot our troubles is to fluri out {
what other people'are suffering." AH
of us have troubles, but most of us
would have little to complain of if
we knew what others ure bearing up
under
Of course it remains to be Keen
whether the legislature will grant
the revest which ia to made at its
next session tor an appropriation to
establish a boll weevil station at
Florence; but since word has gono
down the lino that this is the one
thing to save the cotton farmers oi
the State from ruin the appropriation
probably will be forthcoming.
A station similar To the one whicu
it is proposed to erect ut Florence
has been in operation in leuisiana
tor several years and it has not dn?- <
covered u way.to checkmate the boil]
weevil's progress or to limit iho
damage Hie msect is able to do ia
fields of cotton it attacks, uitnougn>
wt are told, tue federal government |
has spent many thousands of dollars
^ in promoting experiments there and
has assigned some of its best men to
the work-, But those who ure behind
the movement to establish the
station at hloitsnce would have the
people of South Carollua believe that
, this sitat.on will be able to* do what
the Louisiana station has not been
uble t5 do. Possibly so/ but if there
is room tor doubt on that score there
certainly is no room for doubt thai
it will provide a number of good Joes,
which will last us long as there is a.
boll we&vil tills side of eternity. Tuo
farmers, themselves know as much,
v and perhaps more, about fighting the
boll weevil as the "experts' we are.
told will be In charge of the Florence
station. But from, time to time tit j
" "experts" will seud broadcast overt
tho Slate bulletins telling of . the
niiuuonui ?urK uiey are ooing una
there will be some consolation i.?,
readiiVK the bulletina to learn whether
the writers are Mood spellers. Tha
bulletins will tell not what the "ex-'
perta" are doing but what they shouldi
he doing. Some members of the Legislature
are "fed up" on the work oi
"experts."' For several years the
Stale has been*makihg an appropriation
tor the "expert" service of the
tick eradication work in some of the
coast counties, and as often as the
appropriation has been mpde during
the last half dozen years the Legisla-1
ture has heen assured that "the work'
"will be wound up in another year."
Apparently the work today is aboui
as fur from being wound up as it
ever was. But the boll weevil appropriation
is apt to be made notwithstanding
the tick eradication experience
of the Legislature- To be sure
it may not, perhaps will not, result ,
beneficially tor the farmers of the .
State, but it is being aponsoied by j
?newspapers which usually briug '
home the bacon when they go after
an appropriation, regdrdlesa of the
merit of their claims. This does not
speak well either lor the Legislature >
or for tha people of Soutlx.Carolina,
but it is a fact nevertheless. k "
