- Athens, scene of the world's most
recent revolution, is the subject of
the following communication to the
National Geographic society:
'jm "When the city of Athens . passed
from Turkish control and was designated
the capital of the new free
kingdom of Greece it was a mere
handfnll -of wretched huts clustered
tout the Acropolis- Today It Is a
thoroughly moueru city, with 3pien,
did streets, magnificent public buildings
handsome residences, attractive
parks, and uiusi of the modern improvements
of which Western ct'les
boast. The building of this ciiy in a
land of such scanty resources is
fairly comparable to the development
of our own rich West, and even moro
meritorious when all the circumstances
are considered- Indeed, had the
Greek of today nothing to his credit
save the building ot the attractive
capiUt of his nation, that alone wouid
be sufficient to rayk him among the
constructive agencies jt the modern
world.
"In this city of old memories uud
now ot strikingly new plans Grtck
life centers as In its classic days, und
here ancient and modern Orcein are
inextricably mingled in a curious I
medley of modern It 7 and antiquity,
which colorB the must crdinury of
everyday affairs- On every hand
' arise shattered ntoiiumncs>. ot its
spledld * past, and N even the tiniest
fragments which servo to link tho ii'e
of the present with the days that are
gone are most carefu'ly preserved.
"The .Greek govornmept l as Leon

the safeguarding of its antiquities.
The museums at aligns are handsomely
housed, conveniently arranged,
accurately catalogued and open
to inspection and study without tee,
this latter being a point* of great
pride with Athenians.
"In addition there are now, at various
poiqts in the kingdom where
research Is going on, smaller museums
devoted to- the preservation of
the treasures of the locality.

and mighty rock of the Acropolis,
dominated by the Parthenon, rnutchless
even in its ruins, projecting the
changeless purity of its lines against
the background of the changing centuries,
which have made of it in turn
the ehirne of the vestal, the church of
the Christian and the mosque of the
Moslem, and now and ever the ideal
of all the lovers of the beautiful.
"Near at hand are the chief rem^

on the one side the tiny gem of the
Temple of the Wingless Victory, so
dhaste and delicate in its proportions
and outline, and on the other- the
firechtheum, with its unique Porch
of the Caryatides.
t "Hard by the stairs of the imposing
Propylaea rises the - sturdy rock of
the Hill of Mara whence Paul declared
"the Unknown God. At a little
distance stands the rough hewn

strove in matchless phrase,
while just below rise the ivory-tinted

best preserved of all the classic remains.

Within a few steps rise the green

of the world. Another relic of Hadrlau's
day, still preserving the purpose
of its imperial builder, dead these
2,906 years, is the ancient acqueduct,
dating from the year 146, which still
brings water ^o the city.
"Athens has two sharply divided
seasons, a rainy and a dry. The latter
extends into early October. It U
at this season, as well as earlier in
the summer, that Athens leads an
outdoor life, with restaurants and en

for the commerce in which Greeks
have always taken an active part.
"Athens' climb from her equal id
