Prospects for the success of the
Democratic party in Nebraska tlii9
fall have recently been heightened
by the announcement thut for the
? first time In years there is good feeling
between United States Sonator
Hitchcock and William Jennings
Lryau and that .Mr. Bryun is now in
'Nebraska speaking in the interest of
the reelection ot Senator Hitchcock
and the State ticket, headed by
Churles E. Bryan, brother of the
Commoner, as the parly candidate for
governor. In the Suites of the Central
West and Northwest .Mr. Bryun
has an immense following, especially
among the farmers, and it is gratifying
to read that he is actively In the
cumpalgn this year. With the passing
of the years one is not surprised
when he reads that the average public
man who yesterday* was a champion
of the people's cause in some
. great issue lias shifted about until today
his- viewpoint is changed and
that he 13 to bo found where the Jiugle
of the coin is loudest. Not so,
however, with Mr. Bryan. He is today,
as he was nearly a third of a
century ago when the Democratic
party first put him up as its candidate
for the presidency, an advocate
of the things test in government for
the mass of the people. Little wonder,
therefore, that he has been able

to hold the friendship for these many
years of the Unnumbered throng of
his fellow citizeus- Mr. Bryan has
done an immense amount Of good in
his day. To emphasize the fact one (
needs but to recall that to him is |
largely due the credit fhr the adoption
of the prohibition amendment to the
federal constitution and for the
amendment lor the direct election of
United States senators. It is to be *
hoped that the pcopie of Nebraska '
and the other atut*s la which Mr. i
Bryau will speak during the present ^
campaign will need his words, for he
can be depended upon to urge the*
election of men who will not seek.to
pass laws compelling the people to
turn their pockets inside out that th.
profiteers and other money grabbers
niair swipe the little they have left (
after the Republican buccaneers have
been in charge of the national government
for the-last few years.

"i hope it Will not be stated in The J
Times that 1 have resigned, as chiei 1
of police of Fort .Mill," Tuesday said
X. AI. .Mc.Mauus discussing the action (
of town -council .Monday night in '
adopting a resolution saying it wouid
be for the good of the service if a
change were made in the office. "I*
should like for the public to know the
tacts," he continued. "A few days
ago 1 arretted ut the depot in Fort
Mill a negro who was accused ot
robbery at \Vaxhuw, X.- C. Another
negro who was suspected of being
implicated in the robbery was at the
depot at the time and' 1 was waiting
to also arrest liim if he attempted'to
board a train 'which was about due
Hut before the train came the poltci
chll bell rang and to answer 1t '
promptly 1 asked two citizens of the ?
town to guard the prisoner until 1 1
returned.
"A member of council was stand- (
ir.g iiearby und witnessed the inci- '
dent. {Seemingly lie thought 1 should '
have called upon other citizens to 1
guard the prisoner, for at a meeting '
ot couuc.l on October [l ho brought 1
up the matter and criticised my ac- 1
tion. I was told what liu s.i;d and it 1
offended me to the extent that 1 '
used hursh language in commenting . '
on his remarks. I was summoned to
appear at the meeting ui oo inctl
Monday night and explain what 1 had
3aid. I did so, expressing regicl to.
my hasty words. Council did not ac
eept my apology, lio.\e\or, and 1 wac
virtually told that I had been dis- '
missed, i leave the public to judgt
'whether I was treated with the prop- '
or consideration-"
