captured a liquor still and arrested
two white men near Van
Wyok who are accused of operating
the still. The men were taken
to the Lancaster county .jail to
await trial.

Louise, 9-year-old daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Masesy, is ill
of typhoid fever. Dr. .1. B. Elliott,
attending physician, yester.
day said he was at a loss to know
how the little girl contracted the
disease. Speaking of the child's!
illness, Dr. Elliott also said that
this is the first case of typhoid
fever he has had in his practice
in more than two years.
Evangelistic services will hegin
at Pleasant Valley Baptist
church next Sunday and will
continue through the week, with
services morning ami night. The
Rev. A. Finch, former pastor of
the Fort Mill and Pleasant Valley
Baptist churches, will assist
the pastor, the Rev. J. \Y. 11.
Dyches, in the meeting. Sunday
morning Mr. Finch will fill the

The annual picnic j>f the Fort
Mill Presbyterian Sunday school,
held Tuesday near the site of the
old White grist mill on Steel
cieek, two miles east of town, I
proved a pleasant event for the |
teachers and children until rain j
came along shortly after dinner I
and forced a hurried return to
town. The Sunday school had it
similar experience when the picnic
was held at the saiue place a
few yeyrs ago.
State Senator S. E. liailes of
Lancaster county left Saturday
p morning on a business trip to St.
Louis, Mo., expecting to be away
until the latter part of the pres,
cut week. An erroneous report
which caused some uneasiness for
friends of Senator iiailes was circulated
on the streets of Fort
Mill Monday morning to the effect
that he was a passenger on
the Missouri Pacific train whie.it
was wrecked at l)e Soto, Alo., 20
utiles south of St. Louis, Sunday
night in which Hi persons were
l.; i. 1 i
it it it'ii ana injured. Senator |
Bailcs made the trip to St. Louis
over the Southern railway and
had perhaps not reached thai
city when the wreck occurred on
the Missouri Pacific.
Reports coining into Fort Mill
during .the last day or two from
nearby lifrms in York and Lancaster
counties regarding the
ruyuges of the boll weevil have it
tnat the insect is doing great
damage to the cotton crop on
8oiae farms, while on others tile
destruction Ft has wrought up to
this time does not appear to be
serious. Ycsterduy the statement
was made that one well known
.Pleasant Valley fanner had offered
$'20 to have the fallen
squares picked up in four acres
of cotton, but finding no one to
do the work he had given up
hope of raising any cotton in the
field and had abandoned it lo?ne
