boy for turning in a false fire

is said to have stated thut for the
next offense the fine will be $10.
Miss Effie Riteh, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Riteh returned
-to Fori Mill Friday after attending
the annual State meeting in
Greenwood last week of the Epworth
League as the representative
of the local league of St.
John's Methodist church.
Miss Florence Boyd of Montevallo,
Ala., is a guest for three
weeks of her mother, Mrs. Mamie
Boyd. Miss Boyd is secretary
to the president of the State
normal ^ school at Montevallo,
where sne has made her home for
scverul years.
Thos. P. Lytle a few days ago
awarded the contract for the
erection on upper Main street of
an eight room residence to be
occupied by himself and family.
The principal part of the material
to be used in the construction
of the house was bought
from the Hock Hill Lumber Co.
One lone bale of cotton was
sold 011 the Fort Mill market yesetrday.
The recent advance in
the price of the staple hus had
the effect of bringing to the local
market several hundred bales,
little during the last week, however.
The best price offered for
cotton*in Fort Mill yesterday was
22 cents.
Twtr heavy showers late Monday
afternoon upset the plans ot
numerous Fort Mill township
farmers who had hoped to get in
a full week's work in their crops.
Other farmers whose work had

Miss Johnsie Kell of Atlantic
City, N. J., is visiting relatives
and friends in the Fort Mill community.
Miss Kell is a trained
nurse and has made her home in
Philadelphi and Atlantic City for
a number of years. She was
reared in Fort Mill as tlie daughter
of the late Dr. S. A. Kell, who
practiced medicine here for 25
years following the close of the
Civil war.
The committee of the Fort Mill
poBt, American Legion, which is
arranging for the celebration of
July Fourth in Fort Mill has received
definite word from Congressman
W. F. Stevenson that
he will come to Fort Mill for the
? celebration and deliver a speech.
The committee is preparing an
attractive program which is ex?
peeled to bring to Fort Mill for
the day many visitors from nearly
towns and other counties besides

known in Fort Mill, not only in
business circles, but in a military
way. It was while serving as a ,
lieutenant of the Fort Mill com- pany
overseas he was awarded
the congressional medal of honor.

To Fix Assessments Later.
At the meeting of the Democratic
executive committee lor
York county held in the court
house at York ten days ago. assessment
of candidates who will
enter the primary in August was
dtferred to a later meeting, to be
held, it is said, about August 1.
itccently there has been complaint
in York county, as there
has been in other counties of the
.State, that the assessments are
too high and that they should be
reduced this year; but a member
of the committee for this county
is quoted as suying that it prob*
ably will be impossible to reduce^
I ilie assessments this year, us the
expense of holding the August
primary will cost even more this
year than it cost two years ago.
A number of new voting prej
cincts recently have been established
in the county and the expense
of conducting the primary
at these precincts will be relatively
as great as it is at the old precincts.
The only source of revenue
the executive committee has.
it was pointed out, is the assessment
of the candidates and there
seldom is any money lelt in the
treasury after the advertising
bills, the per diem of managers
?}?d other necessary expenses are
paid.
One of the officials of the town
of Port Mill yesterday said that
there had been a considerable increase
in the amount of police
tines collected by the town for
the first two months of the second
quarter of the year as compared
with the' amount collected
for the same months of the first
quarter. The same official said
he attributed the increase mainly
to the good work of N. M. McManus,
chief of police.
