In one year the 12 federal reserve
banks of the country have
reduced their commercial louns
, from $1,224,533,000 to $362,662,000.
Tile reduction is more than
two-thirds. There seems ? to he
\ little human interest ill these tigures.
Back of them, though, is
the greatest tragedy of our generation?the
story of _ deflation,
with its hurricane of desperation,'
fear, loss, despair and necessity.
It tukes very litle more time
and trouble ami expense to do a
thing right than to do it half
right, Hut many people do not
realize this. And when you do a
thing well you get so much more
satisfaction out of it. Nobody is
ever happy over a slovenly job
of any kind. One of the main
reasons why many people never
succeed in life, and are continually
discontented, is that they
have never learned to do their
work thoroughly.
Murshull doff re, France's war
hero, is big enough to do things
out of the ordinary and get away
with them. He wus a guest at a
formal luncheou in New York
city the other day, at which nu
merous local celebrities were
present. It was a tiresome affair,
as such things usually are, and
the great Frenchman was bored,
lie nodJecT while some blunderbuss
was making a speech, and
fell asleep. A-friend at his elbow
nudged him. lie opened his
eyes, grinned, yawned, and fell
asleep again. Nobody criticised
hmi unkindly. It was .J off re, and
whatever he did was all right. A
lesser mun would have been socially
ostracised forever, but not
J off re. it must be a line thing
io oe big enough to do anything
you want to Uo ami get away
with it.
Americans everywhere are now
interested in baseball, which has
been the country's national sport
since the Knickerbocker club of
New York started the world's
first buseball club in 1845. Six
years before that Abner Doubleday
took paper, quill pen anu
ruler and an inventive brain and
mapped out the first diamond.
Abner certainly started something.
lie would have heart failure
if he could come baek today
and see a big league grandstund
audience in action. You can*
never tell what you are starting.
Some of the things Recently
brought into existence may play
as big part in American life as
baseball. It is fortunate that we
have u national sport thut combines
physical exercise with the
exercise of the brain, mental agility
and quick decision. The one
unfortunate thing about baseball
i? that the game is too strenuous
for men in middle life to play it.
r' Meeting at Presbyterian Church.

A man never realises how poor
ho is until he starts to make out
ah income tax return.
Some people may rejoice to
learn that the paid reformers and
uplifters are suffering from ths
general depression.

that the wire wras loosely
wrapped around the stake, Mr.

it. He called for those inside to
draw in a tape he was using, it is
said, and- in the noise" made by

misunderstood by Will Dfaon, an
18 year old employee, who turned
on the current.
Mr. Ouinn was a veteran of the
World war und was widely and
favorably known. He is survived

are beginning to discover
what a fine fellow the editor is.
