PRIMARY TOPIC?The Sin or Selfishness. JUNIOR TOPIC?Elijah Denounces Selfish King. INTERMEDIATE AND 8ENI0R TOPIC ?Jehovah's Champion Feared. YOUNO PEOPLE AND ADULT TOPIC ?Respecting the Rights of Others. I. Ahab Covets Naboth's Vineyard (VV. 1-0). , 1. Locution of the vineyard (v. 1). It joined Ahab's summer home In Jezreel. lie wanted to transform it into an herb garden and thus round out his property. 2. Ahuh's proposal (v. 2). He offered to buy it outright for money, or give In exchange a better one. Ahab's wish for it uus a seltish whim. Lie did not at ull need it. 3. Nubutb's refusul (v. 3). It was for a twofold reason: (1) regard for the paternal estate; (2) obedience to c.wl'u i-tf /I.... dr. ..?o >?o ,.t Mm., in. 7-9). His refusal was on conscientious grounds. A king, even, bus no right to ask of ills subject that he violate ills conscience. 4. Allah's behavior (v. 4). He came Into ills house, lay down upon his bed am! refused to eat. The king was sulking like a s|*4led child. This Is a picture of what a fool even a king.may make of himself. I art us learn that "godliness with contentment Is great gain" (I Tim. G:0). 5. Jezebel's inquiry (vv. 5, G). Apparently she came v'lth 'the .sympathy of a wife, inquiring as to the cause of his behavior. Hut when she knew of Noboth's refusal site wus violently angry. That a humble subject should refuse to conform to the desire of the king was an insult which she would not brook. II. Ahab Taking Possession of Naboth's Vineyard (vv. 7-16). 1. Jezebel's treachery (vv. 7-15). (1) Her contemptuous question (v. 7). She taunted him for his cowardIce. The fear of being thought weak moves a weak man quickly. Scorn Is a powerful weapon In the hands of unscrupulous persons. Many persons, especially boys and young men, are (urned from the pathway of right through the sneers of godless companions. (2) Her ixliortutlon to Ahnh (v. 7), "Arise, eat bread, and let hnnrf )w> murev ' A lino great Influence ov??r her husband. Many a man has been saved from discouragement and therefore defeat, through his wife's Influence. Unfortunutely In this case the Influence of the wife Is had. llad women are In many instances the devil's angels, leading men front the path of virtue. We should thank God for the uplifting Influence of good women, hut should beware of evil women. (fl) Her promise to Ahub (V. 7). "I will give thee the vineyard of Nahoth." She took matters into her own hands. If Ahuh was too weak to he king, she would rule for him. (4) Iler wicked scheme (tv. 8-15). She wrote letters in Allah's name, sealed them with his seal and sent theiu to the elders and nobles who were dwelling In the city with Nahoth, asking them to proclaim n fast, as though some great calamity had befallen the nation, and place Nahoth before the public as the one who wiw the cause of It all. They were instructed to flail two false witnesses who would testify against Nubotli. The ehnrge they brought according to the wicked device of Jezebel wus blasphemy apainst God and the king. Naboth's only offense was Ills refusal to sell his estnte, contrary to tbe law of God. When they bad stoned to death Nahoth and his sons (II Klnps 9:20), they came and told Jezebel, who In turn came to Ahnh with the Information and directed hlin to take possession of the vineyard. 2. Ahab goes to Jezreel to take possession of Naboth's vineyard (v. 10). Ahnh hnd not killed Nahoth, but he eagerly accepted the prize without Inquiring as to how It was secured. III. Elijah in Naboth's Vineyard Announcing Doom Upon Ahab (vv. 1720). 1. Doom upon Ahab (vv. 17-22). Elijah told him tbe dogs should lick bis blood In tbe place where they licked tlie blood of Nil hot h. Evil was | to fail upon Ahnb and his 'posterity, even wipe out his seed and name, lie was guilty of conspiracy, murder, robliery, perjury, blasphemy, though he hnd been silent and inactive. God held Idin responsible for Jezebel's nets, for he was king and head of the nation. The day of reckoning did come to Ahah (I Kings 22:38). 2. HJoom upon Jezebel (vv. *23-20). Hhe likewise should he eaten by dogs by the wall of Jezreel. This was literally fulfilled (U Kings 0:33-37). "lie sure your sin will find you out." IV. Ahab's Repentance (vv. 27-29). Because of thin, Cod promised to withhold Judgment during his lifetime. j God's Standard of Measurement. l.et us lay to heart UimI'm standard of measurement.
