w^Sf Tfefiitt*8* rice ever grown in
this country was at Charleston. In
the early spring of 1694 a vessel
from Madagascar put into Charlcston
harbor in distress, badl.v
buttered from an encounter with
a storm. The captain of the disabled
vessel having received numerous
kindnesses at the- hands
of Latigfave Thomas Smith, then
one of Charleston's foremost citizens,
on leaving presented him
with a small bag of rough rice,
which he advised the landgrave
to plant in a moist spot ami note
the result. Smith planted the seed
in the garden of his residence.
When the rice matured ami was
harvested he divided a portion of
the seed thus obtained among
several of his friends. In a few
years rice beeaine one of the staple
products of the colony.
