f 1 S * - . ?*gsgggf??B3g HOME OF JEFFEBSOM. m ^ One suggestion for the disposition of Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson, near Charlottesville, Va., is that it be made an American companion-piece to Chequers, says The Literary Digest. Chequers is a country estate presented to the British nation as a home for the prime minister?a retreat from Downing street. As America has 110 prime minister, the parallel would have v to be supplied by the president. Monticello, the creation us well as the home of Jefferson, is in danger of pussing out of existence ... .........1 * VI UClllg IUI1 T CI 1CU IU nuilll" inconsistent with its historie * I ijjrnity. It is a type of colonial mansion that registers some of the best achievements of the art of building of its time and pleads to be preserved for posterity. Its present owner is Jefferson AI. Levy, one-time congressman ^,'roin New York, who spent more than a million upon its restoration, but feels that the cost of its upkeep is beyond his means. The pity of decaying old houses is felt in Kngland its well'as here; one famous old' mansion, Stowe House, has been saved by a generous purchaser who in turn gave it to the nation. Commenting 011 the suggestion that Monticello he bought by the government and made a country Wlute House, the Huston Transscript. savs: "Now Montieello is only a few hours away from Washington. It is within easy motoring distance of the White House. It is beautifully located on the south hank of the liivauna river, just where the stream makes its way through the Southwest mountains of the Allegheny range. Most of the estate is covered with a heavy growth of timber and many of tin* fruit trees near the house were planted by Jefferson. The house has been described as 'having the appearance of an Italian villa, with a Greek portico and considerable of the features of colonial architecture.' Some of the plans drawn for it by Jefferson after his journeys is Kurope are still treasured on the estate. "Were this 'country White House' to come into the possession of the nation it would afford a welcome retreat for the chief executive over the week-end or at any time that the public business would permit his being a ** few hours'distance from the cap ital. It would enable him to go there and gel away from the pressure of visitors when he wished to prepare a message to Congress or confer for several days with a cabinet otlieer concerning some Kivat public quest inn, or to spool a day in i ii?> company of Marshal Foe lit next autumn, for example, or some other distinguished visitor. "In the absence of the president the estate could he open to Americans who wished to make a pilgrimage to the home of .leffer son?the plantation where he was horn, and the house whose huild ing he personally supervised and in whose development he took great pride and pleasure." ffl A Tonic | m For Women k UU "I was hardly able to drag, I 2 was so weakened," writes Mrs. y QQ W.
