Sunset'and twilight are too familiar
to command the conspicuous
attention of aU the people of
the workaday world, saya The
State. Yet probably there are
few so sodden and matter-of-fact
as never to know a mood of sensitiveness
to the spetacle of fadmo

ing night. It is apt to be a
L vaguely sad regretful mood for
the dying of another day always
symbolizes the transitory nature
of all things in our world. There
is innate protest.'against the long
farewell to a day that will return
no more, whether to repeat
for us its gift of joy or its measure
of opportunity.
About the dawn of a new day,
-however, there is a wholly different
aspect. As a spectacle the
glory of it is matchless. It iR
youth, not age. It is the triumph
of light, not darkness. It is the
coining with new opportunity,
not the departure with a record
- Jnrritten. It is stimulating, not
depressing, and shines with hopes
not yet dashed or deferred. Another
day in another chance. With
dawn cornea the morning, which
ia fresh, unweary and suffused
with eager forwardness of look.
Yesterday?it ia gone, but here
is another day just aa good.
They?and how many there are
?\yho never witness the breaking
of a new day are losers, who miss
one of nature's grandest displays
and start their days in stale monotony
of habit, without the initial
refreshment of soul and subtle
stimulus to renewed purpose.
It is a pity. As some one has said
ii u mm* umi never wen a buiiwl
or a sunrise, he would travel half
the globe to see the infinite wonder
and grandeur of it. To see
dawn and sunrise, however, he
merely needs to awake and be
; astir a little earlier than is custo
piarv. It is warth the cost every
time. If he be one to whom it
dbes not seem so. then it is a
pity, indeed.
Vote During Encampment.
Fort Mill militia officers yesterday
were informed by the military
department in Columbia that
the second run-aver election between
Capt. F. M. Mack of Fort
Mill and Capt. A. M. McLeod of
Camden for maior of the 3d bat
tftlion, First regiment, N. Q. S. C.,
will be held during the encampy.i
meat of the regiment at Mount
Pleasant next mouth. In the two
former elections six votes have
lfc?en cast for each of the candidates.
The four companies in
the 3d battalion are located at
Rock Hill, Camden, Fort Mill and
Hartsville, and the impression is
that the Rock Iljjl and Fort,Mill
officers are supportingCapt.Mack
while the officers of the Camden
and Hartsville companies are
for Capt. McLeod.
Officers Capture Whiskey.
Four gallons of corn whiskey
conecaled in the underbrush on
a farm in the Gold Hill section of
Fort Mill township Saturday afternoon
was captured by J. H.
Patterson, magistrate's constable,
and V. 1). Potts, police officer.
The whiskey was^ in a tin container,
near which a number of
bottles were found which the officers
thought were to be* filled
with the whiskey as sales were
* made. x' x
