Miss Alice Robinson, congresswoman from Oklahoma, says she won her seat with the slogan, "I ~ L? V_ 1 * II nil l uin u ivepuuucHii. i ne same slogan will keep her from being reelected next year. Miss Robinson is doubtless a fine old lady, but there is about as much reason why she should be in Congress as there is why George Harvey should be supervisor general of the universe. The story. going the rounds of the press that there is a tunnel filled with gold in an old mine in Mexico whidli for two or three centuries Indians have so zealously guarded that numerous white men who have undertaken to recover it have been killed or bcatep off makes interesting reading for these hot summer days, but is to be taken none too seriously. Should the story, be U -1 Hue, nvwcvrr, me proper piau has been hit upon to put the gohl in circulation by publishing the tide broadcast over America. Indians armed or unarmed, if there is gold waiting to be grabbed in Mexico one may be sure that pretty soon there will be enough American adventurers crossing the border in search of it to make every Indian in thfe neighborhood hunt the tall timbers. What care Americans bent upon recovering a tunnel full of gold for the presence of hostile Indians, armed in whatever way they may be! The average American in a past masto* at the game of gold-grabbing. Pity the Indian who gets in the way when he makes up his mind to sit-in at the game where the stakes are as high as the old Mexican mine is said to promise. United" States Senator Tom Watson, we learn from his Columbia (Ga.) Sentinel, is so cocksure that William J. Bryan will never be elected to the senate frcin Frorida that one not familiar with the senator's lack of reputation as a prophet would be pardoned for concluding that Mr. Bryan's cake is all dough before he gets the ingredients mixed. Recently Mr. Bryan stated that on account of Mrs. Bryan's health he had decided to make his home in Florida. At once a number of the political wiseacres jumped to the conclusion that this was tantamount to an announcement of his candidacy for the senate from that State. Possibly their guess is a good one, but Mr. Bryan has not confirmed it. For the good of Florida, the balance of the South and the country generally, The Times hopes Mr. Bryan will enter the senate raee next year in Flor 1 a- - ?* * urn nuu iiiui. ne win De elected. He would make an ideal senator. 11 is election would add brains to that body, of which it is sadly in need. No sectional issue can be raised in Florida or elsewhere against Mr. Bryun. For the last generation he has gone up and \ down the land speaking on every phase of government as only one gifted as he is can speak and not one word has he* said at which the people of any Meet ion could take offense. In season and out of season he has been a friend of the South. No sensible citizen of Florida would refuse to vote for Mr. Bryan because he formerly lived in Nebraska. The Charlotte Observer of last Sunday printed an interesting atory of the success of a business house of that city which began a qnarter of a eentury ago in a mall sraymaxnJU has continued to par* from y?& t6 year, largely through the loyalty of its employees, until today its yearly output totals many thousands of dollars. All of which is well enough in a"Way, but there was a discordant note in the recital of the concern's success which was like spreading a soiled sheet on an otherwise clean bed. One of the -eoncera's oldest employe^,* in point of service, at least, had been so engrossed in his efforts to serve his employers that he had not missed a day from work in 16 years. Think of it?a man wording 16 long years without one day's relaxation from the work he doubtless found it nec eswury 10 ao xo ma?e a uvuig lorhiraself and perhaps his family! What was wrong with the management of this succnssful concern that iw all these years it had not made enough profit from this man's labor to give him a vacation. with pay? To our way oi' thinking this is a case of greed one would travel a long way to see duplicated, and there isn't apt to be much difference of opinion as to whether such a concern deserves to succeed.
