THURSDAY. JUNE 2, 1921.
The wages of railroad employees
have been cnt 400 million dollars
by the United States railroad
labor board. And now the inter
stute commerce commission is said
to be 44discussing" a proposed revision
of freight rates. Thousands
of sidtracks in the country are
filled with empty freight cars and
passenger trains are running with
practically empty coaches. May
this condition continue until the
public is given relief from the
railroad profiteering.
It is discreditable to the General
Assembly of South Carolina
that the alumnae association of
Winthrop college finds it necessary
to solicit funds with which to
complete the Student building at
the institution. A little less hot
ail and more effort to help the
college by those in high official
position would make a s'tronger
UDDeal to the informed nnhlio
Other newspapers published in
the South may say what they
please about it or pass the matter
i in silence as they prefer, but TluTimes
objects to the action of the
American Legion in selecting the
30th of May un a national memorial
dtfy to honor the memory of
the American soldiers who fell in
the World war. May 30rh is
the day observed throughout the
North as memorial day for the
soldiers of the Union armies that
overcame the South in the '60s.
There has been more hatred displayed
for and ill feeling engen,
dered toward the South by speakers
and newspapers in the North
on the 30th of May than on any
other day in the year. No Southern
man who will stop to think
of what has been happening in the
North on May 30th for the last
40 years and more will find much
pleasure in paying tribute to the
World war dead ut the same time
and in many instances in coopeiMltlOll
UMtU L? ??
.??i inunr w iivi art? iifver SO
happy as when the special day
rolls round for vilifying and mis.
representing the soldiers oF the
South and the cause for which
they fought. There is good reason
why every American Legion
post in the South should object to
the 30th of May as national memorial
day for honoring the connti.v's
World war dead.
