DANIEL BOON* TREE. Tmumssss Landmark Points Out * Pioneer's Trail to Kentucky. Jonesboro. in southeastern Ten. neesee, is the oldest total in the State, and at one time during the v 18th century was the capital of the State of Franklin. Many people doubtless have never known there was such a State in America, but every schoolboy and girl knows about the man who was responsible for the* founding of Jonesboro, the intrepid pioneer, Daniel Boone. A two hour drive over tire hilly road northeast from Jonesboro will bring one to a tree still in the strength of life which stands as the living'record of an f^VPllt ill tll?? lif?? r?f nrnhuhlv 4-Vio first white man to venture into the heavy forests formerly covering the western slopes of the Appalachians. Of interest to every boy in the land is the inscription on this tree to the effect that "D. BooticillEl) A BAR On Tree in tkE yEAR 1760." The tree is a giant beech and because of the number of names of persons^ towns and dates cut in the bark the original inscription is now unfortunately obliterated. but its presence on the tree.* about six feet from the ground, is well known to the older generation of donesboro. ?as it was plainly legible 30 years ago and the tree is known to every one as Daniel Boone's "Bar" tree. A few years later than the date on which Boone left this inscrip lion, i 01. iticnam Henderson ot North Carolina, having under consideration the purchase of land for the Cherokee Indians, "employed 1). Boone" 011 account of his familiarity witji the region, along with other hunters, to make a reconnaissance and report on a large tract of land lying in what now comprises the eastern part of Tennessee and Kentucky. Boone again plunged into the for- < est, and a metal table" erected pear the "Bar" tree hv the Tennessee Daughters of the American Revolution now marks the location of the " Daniel Boone Trail from North Carolina to Kentucky. 1769." 1 THECIT # Upper Main Street, Fort IV J serving meals or short orcl a Kiifrv.
