Many fanners reulize but meager Incomes because their business Is small. Such men often feel that their farm business Is sufficiently large to keep them busy the entire year, when, ns a mutter of fact, the actual results accomplished represent less than a hulf year's work, say farm management specialists of the United States Department of Agriculture. A large volume of business may be done on a farm of few acres, while only a small business may be conducted on a poorly managed farm of much larger ncreage. Without reasonable size of business there Is little opportunity for a satisfactory profit In farming. The Essential Factors. There are a number of factors which materially affect success In the organization and management of farms. Some are of greater Importance than others, some may he d!s-1 regarded without serious consequences ; but ns n rule the profits derived from farming depend very largely upon the extent to which certain I essential features of organization and management have been adopted and adhered to, say farm management specialists of the United States Department of Agriculture. Assuming a type of furmlng adapted to soil, climatic, and labor conditions, anil especially to local conditions with reference to markets and market facilities, success is generally dependent upon four Important factors: Size of business, yield of crops, returns from live stock, and efficiency of labor. Many other factors have their Influence and must not be overlooked on a given farm. For Instance, the wise expenditure of capital Is very important. Aguin, In obtaining a good return from live stock the efficiency In feeding Is very Important. Farm management studies show, however, that the farmer whose business Is efficient In the four fuctors outlined Is usuully successful. The farms that excel In none of these respects usually fall. Those deficient In one or two may succeed, but their chances of success ure greatly lessened. In comparing farms with respect to volume of business some of the more Important factors to be conr'dered are sixu ot i it t in. acres iu crops, me amount of live stock carried, the amount of capital Invested, and amount of labor required In operating the furtn. On farms where one enterprise predominates, such as a specialised cotton, fruit, or dairy farm, the best measure of size of business may be the acres In cotton, acres In fruit, or number of cows. The amount of labor required In operating the farm may be used to good advantage In comparing farms of different types. Twenty acres of truck crops may, under suitable conditions, equal 200 acres of grain, hay and general live stock, both as to labor required and Income received. Crop yields grently Influence farm profits. Some farmers make fair profIts with low yields because some other phase of the farm business Is sufficiently developed to offse' the poor yields, but Jt Is doubtless true that USEFUL HOMEMADE LIMEKILN Where Necessary Materials Are Obtainable Farmer Can Prepare His Own Lime. When there Is a source from which | the farmer can obtain limestone or oyster or clain shells he can prepare his own lime by grinding or burning. If small amounts of lime are needed the burning of the material furnishes lime more chenply than does grinding, says the United States Department of Agriculture. Two rows of cordwood mixed wvtn ugnter Kindling are put down to form n Inyer. Next comes a layer of coal, then a layer of limestone, and nfter this alternate layers of coal and limestone. One part of coal should burn several parts of stone. When the pile Is laid up the whole Is covered with a layer of earth and the kindling Ignited. As the burning continues the gas must be allowed to escape through a hole at the top of the pile or the process will not be entirely satisfactory. Oyster shells and clam shells may be burned In the same way. The fire should he nlwnys under control and precautions taken to allow the flames to penetrate the layers of stone or shell. BULKY FEEDS OF ADVANTAGE Serves to Assist Digestion and Promotes Health of Poultry?Variety Is Valuable. Bulky food Is of great advantage to poultry, as It serves to assist digestion . and promotes health. Variety la the ration is also most valuable. '* ^**' Inefficiency and Efficiency?Extreme Types but True Ones.. these Rome farmers could make mort money with higher yields. Profits Increase at least until ylelt's are ob, talned considerably above the nvernge for the region, but beyond tins limit very high yields are liable to be obtained nt the expense of farm profits. Quality of Live Stock Important. On farms where live stock Is an Important enterprise, the qunllty of the stock Is very Important. On a majority of farms, except In the South and certain of the Western states, more of the crops are fed to live stock than are sold direct. On many farms the nnlmals are the market for th6 crops, hence the production of these Is a most important factor In fnrm profits. The best of corn and hay crops will count for little when fed to nnlmals that make returns below the market prices for these crops. On the other hand, fcood Hv? stock on the individual farms may not be profitable If not fed and cared for economically. The exceedingly diverse nature of farm operations makes wide opportunity for Inefficiency to enter Into their performance. In a factory with modern machinery u mun is expected to do a certain amount of work, and In many Instances the machine sets the pace for him. Generally the worker on the farm must be his own boss und must set his owu pace. lie must also work under most adverse weather conrllflnna - .?>v?a ill I.UI llllll llUIV-a. UllWI U great deal of work must be devoted to things which add little or nothing to the profits of the business. It requires twice as much time for some men as compared with others to do a certain kind of work. Work may also be so organized that a given amount of effort accomplishes more than the average. The efficient use of horse labor is also very important and bears a close relation to size of business. On the one-man farm the horses must necessarily be unemployed every time the farmer finds it necessary to do work not requiring horse labor. On the larger farms the work can be so arranged as to have one mnn keep the horses busy while others attend to the work where horse labor la not needed. Well-Balanced Farm Profitable. A well-balanced farm business is nearly ulways profitable. The farms that ure as good or better than the average of their community In ail four of the factors here mentioned seldom fail to mnke u good prodt. Thus, If a farm is devoted to a type of farming adopted to its conditions, if it is as good or better than the average in size of business, yield of crops, production of live stock, and efficiency in the use of labor, and is adequately and economically equipped, it is almost certain to be profitable. The weakest factor Is the one that needs attention In Improving the business. If the quality of the live stock is high, greater improvement in the fnrra business can usually lie obtained by devoting attention to developing the size of tire business or sale of cash crops, or increasing labor efficiency, rather than by further improving the quality of live stock. The Department of Agriculture has recently prepared a bulletin," A Method of Analyzing the Farm Business." which contains valunble information for farmers who wish to organize their operations on an economic basis. This bulletin and other printed matter on the subject mny be had by Interested persons free. ? r? ? ? iLESPEDEZA AS FORAGE CROP I It is Valuable for Soil Improvement and It Is Relished by All Classes of Stock. Steep slopes, poor soil, rocky land, unusual corners, gullied and wooded tract?all these nfford opportunity for growing timber profitably. Certain kinds of trees, like the locust, build up poor soil through the nitrogengathering bacteria In the root nodules. Small gullies can be stopped up by closely packed bmsh and treetops.
