THURSDAY. DEC. 16. 1920.
That the European flotsam and Jetso
m which In recent years ins been
loft as driftwood upon the American
shores by the great transatlantic
liners Is a powerful factor In determining
the attitude of Congress toward
Immigration was proved In the
adoption Monday by the house of
representatives of the amendment
to the Johnson bill providing that
immigrants were to he excluded
from this country for one year only.
Thus does the house of representatives
play politics while hundreds of
thousands of Americans are out of
etnployment with little ;proni|lse of
work In the near future and even
less to hope for if they must meet
the competition of pauper Immigrants;
but unfortunate as was the
attitude of the house, it was commendable
in comparison with the
prospect of the death outright of
the Johnson bill in the senate. The
subject of immigration is one about
which it is high time to speak plain_
ly. If the future of the country Is
wot^h considering, America should
nt once shut the door in the face of
the ignorant, diseased and depraved
European hordes that are daily
coming to this country. Already too
ninny of these aliens, literally raised
as bedfellows of swine and cattle,
hrivo been allowed to establish themselves
here. Fortutiately, few of
them find the way to the South, but
while this section is in the main free
of their baleful presence, it Is nevertheless
injured by the influence they
exercise over the time-servers in
Congress?members of both the big
parties.
Friends of Greece set up the claim
that it is one of the world's oldest
democracies and that while the
king is nominally the Ilea I of toe
government, lie is in fact without |
real power to determine either the
domestic or foreign policy of 1 lacountry.
Unfortunately for tSreece.
the claim will not bear close Investigation.
The average Oreek. not yet
free of the influence of centuries of
monarchical oppression, still bows
before the trappings of royalty and
readily acquiesces in the will of the
^sovereign. If this were not true.
Constantino eoubl not have kept
Greece out of tho World wiir for I
nearly three years. The sympathy |
of most of the (Sreeks apparently
was with the ullles from the day*the
Oermnn army crossed the Itelgtun
frontier In the summer of 15?14. bui
so powerful was the hold o*. ''onstantlne
upon his subjects that towns
nlde for years to stay their desire
to enter the conflict against his
brother-in-law. the Oermnn Kaiser.
Another proof that Greece Is for the
most part a democracy in name only
is furnished by the failure of the
country upon the death of King - ?exander
a few weeks ago to declare
for a republic and set Itself to the
task of electing a president. In?
stead of faking such a step, the
Greeks In a nationwide plebiscite
voted for the return of Constantino
to his old throne, thereby gaining
the ill-will of England and Prance,
governments which are in position to
wreck their country by wlthhoiuing
from It financial assistance wi.uout
which it will go on the rocks. Constantino
meanwhile Is reported to
have left Switzerland, where he has
been living since the allies forced ,
him to abdicate, for Athens; but ,
there is yet hope that the Greeks ,
will come to their good senses and
in Home way prevent him from
ngatn becoming ruler of the country.

Years, Suffering Pain, Nenroas
and Depressed?Read Her
Own Story el Recovery.
' Paint Rock, Ala.?Mm. C. 1L Btegsll,
of mar hero, recently related the toltowing
lntereetlng acoount of her recovery:
MI was In a weakened condition.
X was sick three years In bed.
suffering a great deal of pain, weak,
nervous, depressed. I was so weak,
I couldn't walk across the floor; Just
had to lay and my little ones do the
work. I was almost dead. I tried
every thing I heard of, and a number ol
doctors. Still I didn't get any relief.
1 couldn't oat, and slept poorly. I
believe if I hadn't heard of and taken
Cardul I would hare died. I bought
lz bottles, after a neighbor told m?
what it did tor her.
"I began to eat and sleep, began to
gain my strength and am now well
and strong. I haven't had any trouble
since ... 1 anre can testify to the
| good that Cardul did me. I don't
think there la a better tonic made
' and I believe It saved my life."
For over 40 years, thousands of women
have used Ccrdul successfully,
in the treatment of many womanly
ailments.
If you suffer aa these women did,
take Cardul. It may help you, too.
