Telephone, local and long distance, No. 112. ? Entered at the postofflce at Fort Ml|l, S. C., as mall matter of the second class. THURSDAY, DEO. 9, 1920. For the present the eyes of the country nre turned toward Washington to see what the Congress of the United Stntes Intends to do to relieve the business depression that Is daily costing such an enormous sunt. That Congress Is in position to do much to bring about better conditions only those who are profiting by the misfortune of others will deny. The suggestion that the wnr finance board be recreated seems to have, met with general favor, but many of the schemes in the heads of members of Congress to bring about better times nre not worth the timo It takes to tell about them. Senator Dial of South Carollnn wants to regulate trading on the cotton exchange in New York In an effort to help the cotton farmer. There would be merit In his plan if it embraced the proposition to abolish entirely the New York cotton exchange, which has done more to rob the Southern farmer of a fair price for \ his cotton than all other agencies combined, for there the price of cotton is tlxcd daily without regard to supply and demand, and the wealth of I he South, which comes from cotton, is thus absorbed by tills gigantic gambling machine like a dry sponge nhnorhs water?-with this difference, however, one may squeeze a sponge and recover most oft the water It lias absorbed, but there Is no way of recovering the peculations of the cotton exchange gamblers; once they have . got hold of the Southern farmer's money, it is gone forever. Figures made nuhiic this week by the census bureau : how that during the last year nearly four thousand perrons were killed ifv automobiles in this country. Such an enormous toll i f human lives, many of which wore needlessly taken, according to the newspaper reports, should call for the most stringent regulatory measures Kpon tho use of tlio automobile and other motor vehicles In every city, town and country district in America. When .a citizen is fatally or seriously injured hy an automobile using the imhllc hlghwnys. the driver should he immediately arrested, hound over for trial and required to prove absolutely that lawns blameless in causing the Injury to his fellow man. In the case of death resulting from the Injury, he should he indicted for murder, just as other man-slayers are. After many years of daily newspaper reading, wo have yt to observe whore one defendant automobile driver has boon convicted and given the death sentence for killing with his machine a human being. .Many trials of men thus accused are a mockery and a travesty upon justice. Seemingly In most such cases all the defendant,' however worthless and irresponsible he nmv be, has to do to escape punishment hclltting Ills crime is to get up before the jury and tell a plausible lie about tho "unavoidable accident"?which of course he "greatly deplores"?and he is promptly acquitted, even though he has needh ssty and inexcusably brought to a clouts a life which may have been worth inestimably more lo society than his own. A few legal executions of nutomohilists for murder would have n beneficial effect.
