CURIOUS IDEAS ABOUT GOLF
some of Them, That Have Been Preserved,
Will Be Appreciated by
Devotees of the Qame.
Twenty years ago the majority of
women knew nothing about golf, and
many good anecdotes ure 'still told of
some of the curious ideas they had
regarding the gniue. One lady, making
sympathetic conversation at dln.her,
said to an enthusiastic golfer:
"I often see you in your red coat.
Do you need many dogs to play golf?"
A younger lndy said she knew exactly
how the gume was played.
"They get what they call caddies
to hunt about in the grass till they
tiiul a round stone, and then they
hit It into a rabbit hole."
\ A third ludy, who had evidently en
Joyed a nearer view of the game, said:
"It is played by two men. One is
a gentleman and the other Is a common
man. The common man sticks
a ball on a lump of dirt, und the gentleman
knocks It off!*'

Terrace Bank Thrown Up
(Prepared by the United States Department
of Agriculture.)
Erosion Injures or practically ruins
fertile land. Bottom ns well as hill
lands suffer from the ravages of erosion.
Terracing Is the most effective
method of stopping erosion. Other
means of reducing erosion that should >
be employed In connection with terracing
are deep plowing, growing
cover crops, plowing under orgunlc ,
matter,' cuufour plowing, and underdraining.
There are two distinct types of terraces,
the bench terrace and the ridge
terrace. The bench terrace Is particularly
fitted for use on steep slopes;
while the ridge terrace Is especially
adapted for use on moderate slopes.
The ridge terraces nre divided Into
two classes, tlie narrow base and the
broad base. Both inay be laid out
level or with a fall along the terrace
to carry the water oft at a low velocity.
The broad-base terrace can he
cultivated and can be crossed readily
by large farm machinery without In- l
Jury to the terrace. The nnrrow-base
terrace does not possess either of
these advantages, and under ordlnnry ,
circumstances Is less desirable than >
the broad-buse type. However, when
laid 'out level It Is sometimes cultivated
successfully on very sandy soils
(hat capable of absorbing lurge |
quantities of water.
Level-Rldge Terrace.
The broad-base level-rldge terrace
Is laid out absolutely level. This
more nearly meets the requirements
of un Ideal terrace than any other
type. Its distinct advantage over a
terrace with full Is that practically
none of the fertile parts of the soil
ore removed from the field. It Is particularly
suitable for use on open,
permeable soils. When tised In connection
with tile drains on any type
of soil It unquestionably Is the most
efTectlve method ever employed to
stop erosion.
The broud-bnse, grnded-rldge terrace,
generally known as the Mnngum
tefrace, possesses all the advantages
of the broad-buse level-rldge terrace
with the exception of the one stated
lnv the preceding paragraph. It may

BIG WEEK IN HIGHWAY WORK

(Prepared by the TJnlted States Department

In the week ended April 12 Pennsylvania
state highway ottlclnls awarded
road-hulldlng contracts totaling $2,034,378.
according to messages to the bureau

figure Is helleved to represent the
greatest amount of road work formally
contracted for In one week by any
state, and Is regarded as an Indication
of the force that will be put behind
highway construction now that Americans
are turning from the world war to
resume the Interior development of this
country. Of the Pennsylvania contracts
mentioned, the federal government,
under the federnl aid road act.
Is to pay $911,407. A bond Issue of
$o0,000,000 for road building was recently
authorized In Pennsylvania.
BIG WASTE ALONG HIGHWAYS

Sheep Would Utilize Space and Remove
One of Greatest Breeding
Plaees of Insects.
(Prepared by the United States Department
of Agriculture.)
Failure to utilize the large area of
grass along our roads, lanes and fence
rows la a great waste that can well be
stopped. Sheep would utilize this
waste and remove one of the greatest
breeding places of injurious farm Insects.
The lower leaves of corn plants
which usually go to waste, as well as
the cutover grain and hay fields, also
offer considerable feed to farm flocks.

brood. shallow sheet at a low velocity.
It has been found that average
soils ure not washed much in broadterrace
channels where the fall does
not exceed 0 Inches In 300 feet and
It is recommended that this fall never
be exceeded. However, even with this
fall some washing occurs ahd some
rich soil particles are carried off the
field, lleuce a graded terrace should
he given no more fall than Is necessary
to remove the run-off water without
danger of the terruce helng overlopped,
The terraces may be luld out
with a uniform or a variable fall. The
best results are obtained where the
variable fall Is used, since it tends to
prevent the concentration of the water
at the lower end of the terrace.
Also less washing occurs where the
variable fall is used.
The provision for suitable outlets
Is one of the biggest problems iu terracing
work. Natural water courses
make the best outlets. Sometimes It
Is neceRsary to construct ditches for
use as outlets. Where natural draws,
gullies, or roadside ditches are used
ihey should be protected from erosion
by building across them brush, connote,
stop-plank, or soil-saving dams.
The growing of grass lu draws used
for outlets Is especially recommended.
The work of laying off terraces
should be done carefully, preferably
by an experienced man. The best Instruments
ure the .fanner's small telescopic
level and the engineer's lurge
level.
The plow and the V drag are most
generully used for building up terrnces.
Other Implements sometimes
used are the steel ditcher or terracer,
llie slip scraper, the disk plow, and
the road grader. At crossings of
draws and gullies the slip scraper Is
used to build up the high terrace embankment.
It Is very Important that
the top of the terrace be built to the
proper grade. The upper terraces of
a field should always be built first.
Care and Attention.
Terraces require considerable care
and attention, particularly during the
first year after they are built. They
should be Inspected after every heavy
rain and any breaks or weak places
repaired Immediately. The best results
are obtained when the crop rows
are run parallel to the terraces.
In order to maintain the helcht nnd
width of the terrace, a cultivated terrace
should be plowed at least once
each year, and the soil should be
thrown to the center of the terrace.

RIGHT CARE FOR LUBRICANTS
oaa Kractice to Allow Oils and
Greases to Stand in Dusty Places
Without Covering.
Trnctor oporntors sometimes allow
oils and greases to stand In dusty
places without suitable covering Tlius
the oil becotnes Impregnated with
grit, and causes wear on the hearing
parts. Keep the oil nnd grease containers
tightly corked, and covered if
left outside of a closed building. A
clean, drjr place Is essential for the
