Sleeping Sickness Reported.
Two cases of lethargic encephaliIs,
commonly called "sleeping slekiess."

One of the cases Is at Johnsonville.

Dr. Havne. accompanied by Dr. P.

There are two distinct types of the

The disease has occurred In Europe

prevalent in 1895. In England it has

Out of 108 cases. 37 were fital.

Big Loan to State.
The borrowing committee of the
State has procured through the Palmetto
National Bank of Columbia a
loan of $1,50(5000. the Interest rate
boing 3.70 per cent.
The loan is made for current expenses
of the State government. The
general appropriation hill limits the
amount that may be borrowed to $2.100,000.
The remaining $600,000 in
excess of the loan placed will be borrowed
later in the year.
The bids were opened at 1 o'clock.
Four- banks entered the competition.
The three other than the Palmetto
National 'Junk were: The Union National
and the Peoples National Ranks
of Columbia in Joint bid, 3.75 per cent,
with $250 premium: the Peoples National
Bnnk of Rock Hill. 4 per cent,
with $500 premium, and Eyer A Company
of Now York. 5 per cent.
The borrowing committee is composed
of Governor Cooper, S. T. Curter.
State treasurer, and Rut L. Os
borne, comptroller general.

Camp Jackaon Made Permanent.
<Camp Jackson has been made a
permanent camp by Assistant Secretary
of War Crowoll, according to advices
received here by J. D. Miot.
chairman of the board of directors of j
the Chamber of Commerce, from j
Christie Benet in Washington. The I
telegram from Mr. Benet stated that j
Assistant Secretary Crowell assured :
him that the camp was a permanent
army post and that the present plans
included the purchase of the actus'
camp site by the government and
probably more land soon.
Wants Claims Paid.
Congressman Lever has taken up
with the war department the question j
of paying claims to farmers in the I
vicinity of Camp Jackson who were
compelled to move away from their
farms last fall because of the extension
of the field artillery range. About

Corporation to Handle Cotton.
