To Lead Fighting First.
Col. P. K. MeCully of Anderson has
been returned to the One Hundred and <
Eighteenth Regiment, and will come
home with the Thirtieth Division when ,
it embarks for America. Colonel MeCully
was temporarily relieved of
command of this regiment, which was ,
before going into federal service the
First South Carolina National Guard,
and later famous for its part in breaking
the Hindenburg line. Colonel MeCully
was in command of this regiment
on the Mexican border before
going to France.

Feb. 6.?Throe hills were struck
from the calendar ij\ the house of
Statewide interest. One of these wns
to restr'ct hours in cotton mills nnd
textile plans in the State to 48 per
week, and the day not to be in excess
of nine hours. The vote was 69
against the measure and 23 for. The
chief argument against the bill was
made by Representative Leopard of
Pickens county, himself a cotton mill
man. Mr. Leopard contended that
the bill would in effect reduce the
wages of the cotton mill operatives
20 per cent, which the operatives
themselves would resent at this time.
The Horton bill to allow children
between the ages of 20 and 16 years
to work in cotton mills during the
aunamer school vacation was passed
and sent to the senate.

The senate convened at 11 o'clock
and completed its calendar for the
lay in a little more than two hours.

the United States navy at the central
recruiting station in the Arcade building.

Metcalf and Luther J. Edwards of
Spartanburg and John H. A. Derrick
uf Columbia. Four of the young men
enlisted as apprentice seamen, while
Edwards enlisted as fireman, third
class. Subrecruiting stations for the
navy have been opened at Spartanburg.

En Route to Cuba.
Prof. Oscar L. Keith of the University
of South Carr^lna is on his way
to Cuba and South American countries
for an extensive traveling expetlitlon
to become more familiar with
the Spanish language. Word was received
at the university from the professor
saying he was iu St. Augustine,
Fla.. and expected to sail in a few
lays for Cuba. Professor Keith was
granted leave of absence until the
fall term of school In 1919 by the
board of trustees of the university *t
their meeting In December.
