federal aid projects as recommended
by F. H. Murray, acting State highway
engineer. These projects include work
in Horry Bamberg. Newberry. Lancaster.
Chester. Charleston and Union
counties. Project No. 13 sets aside
$22,434 for the construction of a
bridge acrosB Broad River at Lockhart.
which is estimated to be 50 per cent
of the cost of this bridge and the
funds appropriated by the commission
are from the 20 per cent of federal aid

importance.
In this connection the commission
adopted a resolution, copies of which
will be forwarded to authorises in several
counties interested in the construction
of the bridge over the Santee
River. The resolution calls attention
to the fact that the commission has
held until now certain funds from this i
socalled 20 per. cent fund, which it had ;
hoped to use in making possible the |
construction of the Santee River
bridge. The persons interested in the
Santee River bridge project are re- (
cu?stei to let the commission have definite
information as to the status of
that undertaking within the next 30
days. A member of the commission
stated it was hoped that some agreement
could he reached and that the
funds set aside for the bridge over the
Sn' tee River ceuid " e used for that
purpose.
At the office of the commission the
resignation of Charles S. Manning,
elerk and secretary of the commission
since its organization, was announced.
W. \V. Goodman, assistant clerk nnrl
bookkeeper, will assume Mr. Manning's
duties. !
The commission gave out a statement
showing: the distribution of col- ]
lections from automobile license foes j
from January 1. 1911. to April 1, 1918. j
During that period $244,390 50 was the
commission's income from those |
sources. Of that amount $195,512.40 ,
goes hack to the counties of the Stato. j
The total amount of fees collected to
date is $266 158.61.

The sites of the s'ations already
have been selected, 13 on the Atlantic
const and three on the Pacific, but details

stations ran be established within aix
weeks. The 816 000,000 will be included
in the $7,000 OOO.OOO fortifications

This means that big stations will ,
probably be located at Norfolk. Charleston,
Jacksonville and Tamna. These ,
points being selected for strategic reasons

Place Orders For Cans and Jars Early.
Columbia.?Orders for cans and Jars
for canning and preserving should be j
placed with the re'all dealers as early i
as possible, says the food administration.
In this way. it can be assured
that there will be plenty of cans and
jars available for the canning season
ahead. If. however, persons wait until
late in the season to place their
orders, it Is likely that the merchant*
will be out of stock, and It will bo
very difficult to get additional supplies
until probably too lata.

In their hair as well as twigs, leaves

able to move along the ground in
such a stealthy manner that they were
not discernible to the rest of the tribe.
Before a young buck could become

In the midst of the assembled
warriors without being detected. The
real origin of paint on their faces, as
well as on their wigwams and horses,
us claimed by authority, was for the
purpose of making them blend In with
rocks, trees and dirt, so that they could
approach their prey or remain hidden
without detection.

he brought in 11 hides, which netted
him $773, Including the bounty and the
