Governor Manning sent a letter to

Please say to the officers and men

Please say to them, that while
am no longer their commander-inhief,
my interest and pride in them

First Woman Admitted to Bar,
The first woman lawyer to be admitted
to the bar in South Carolina, Miss
James M. Perry of Greenville, took
the oath in the supreme court rooms
and waB regularly enrolled as a qualified
attorney. The act admitting women
to the practice of law in South
Carolina was passed at the recent session
of the general assembly.
Two others who had taken the examination
were also sworn in: O. L. Bong
of Sumter and Patrick H. Kennedy of
Charleston. The avenges attained by
those taking the examination were exceptionally
high, it was. emphasized.
Miss Perry studied law at the University
of California, whre she completed
the prescribed course. Since
'.hen she has been in the offices of
Haynsworth and Haynsworth of Greenville,
her home. Miss Perry will coninue
with this Piedmont firm.
The Lowly Cobbler.
"Did you eat a potato with your
breakfast"
This is the question thnt the Food
Administration is asking of every person
in South Carolina.
Hapsburg Liebe says that the home
ly Irish potato has cut. is rutting and
will continue to cut almost as great a
figure in thiB world war as the submarine.
In Germany, It is aaid, potatoes have
been planted even between the ties of
railroad tracks. Potatoes have kept
the people of Germany alive. Probably
Germany would have caved in except
for the potato.
Potato prices are low throughout
the state; but patriotism as well as
price Is to be considered, says the
food administration.
