The staple continues to come in, but the number of bales is very small as compared to two weeks ago. The fire department responded to an alarm late Thursday afternoon and after some very good work succeeded in subduing the flames which enveloped a tenant house very near the center of . the town. A strong wind was blowing at the time and the house was located in the midst of a group of frame houses hardly more than 50 feet apart. The house was owned by Osmond Barber and was approximately a total loss, and was covered by insurance. An instance of reward for a faithful performance of duty in response to his country's call is shown in the experience of Osmond Barber, owner of Water Oak Farm near Fort Mill. Last spring when the production of food stuffs was urged, he plowed up a large tract of his best land wnicn Had been prepared for cotton, and planted it in corn. The production of cotton throughout this section generally was much below normal but unusually good crops of corn were made. Now Mr. Barber has about 1,000 bushels of corn above his requirements for which he is receiving $2.25 per bushel at the the crib. P * ' s K' ? ' '"rt9V5P Honors for Mr. T. K. Lee. How six girls, on trial at the federal court at Rock Hill for numeral relations .witn so.cuers, formed a pact among: themselves to take their own lives if convicted, and how the agreement was discovered only when one of them attempted to carry out her part of the agreement prematurely by taking carbolic acid, was related by federal officers of Greenville. The girl who took the acid. Minnie McCurry, is improving rapidly. All six were convicted and sentenced to the State penitentiary. The pact was revealed by the sister of the girl who took the poison. The girl had said the day before that she was sure she would be convicted and presumably swallowed the acid on that account. The bottle containing the re mainder of the acid was found hidden in the toilet of the railway station where the girls had planned to drink it on leaving Rock Hill after the trial. Dixie Almost Dry. Kentucky now lacks only 11 counties of being all bone dry. Under the operation of an act just signed by Governor Stanley, liquor can no longer be shipped into any of the other counties of the State, save in violation. Moreover, Kentucky is now on the point of adopting a statute which will add a tax of $1,000,000 to the already hiavily taxed liquor stock remaining in its warehouses. On top of this, comes the news that the house of representatives of Texas has passed a bill prohibiting the manufacture of spirituous or malt liquors within that State. A little more of this and there will not be a wet spot in Dixie.?The Christian Science Monitor. j Preparedness ^ If you could contribute ^ great country-wide prepared inate currency famines and c ups and downs of business, 1 vour rnntriKutn-vrO I he Federal Reserve fund and every dollar depos I + es its strength and the prote By depositing your moi contribution and place yours + this great banktng system.
