Registered men desiring to voluntarily enlist in the army may velt do so, provided they have not been.'summoned by a local board to appear for examination for service in the new ' national army. Mr. J. B. Culp, manager of the Port Mill Lumber company, .had two fingers of his left hand hadly lacerated Saturday by accidental* ly allowing thrtn to come in contact with a rapidly moving saw. A score or more of carpenters left Fort Mill Monday morning for Charlotte to engage in work on the cantonment to be built ndar that city. It is said that carpenters are paid $5 per day for work on the cantonment, while ordinary laborers are paid $2.50 per day. Dr. Samuel P. Watson, of New York, arrived Sunday for a visit to his mother, Mrs. M. M. Watson in-this city. Dr. Watson was pleased Sunday to note the many improvements and changes in the business section of the town since ?his departure from Fort Mil^eome 13 years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Grier entertained at a luncheon Wednesday complimentary to several out-of-town visitor who were their guests \ for the day among whom were Mrs. ?lva Harris and Caldwell Harris of Albemarle, N. Fort Mill people will read with interest announcement of the marriage last Thursday afternoon in Rock Hill of Miss Lillian Cook and W. H. Wilson, of Maye8ville. The weather for the.last Week has been the hottest experienced in this, city for a number of years, thermometer along Main street having for several days hovered near the 100 mark. 5ohn Starnes and Mrs. Florence Pressley, residents of village No.* 1 of tits Fort Mill Mfg. company, were married in Yorkville Tuesday afternoon by Prqbate Judge L. R. Williams. The couple were given a hearty serenading Tuesday night by their friends. The Lancaster News says that Col. and Mrs. Leroy Springs have just returned from a visit to their son, Elliott Springs, at Princeton, N. J. Young Springs is a member of the aviation corps of the United States army, and expects to be ordered to France within a few days. ' Dr. J. L. Spratt, member of the local board handling the matters pertaining to those drafted for the army had the misfortune Friday morning as he was coming in his car from his home at Fort Mill to lose a new tire from the back of his Anderson*car. ? Rock Hill Record. Half a dozen or more Fort Mill men stood the examination in Rock Hill Saturday for the position of rural mail carrier on route No.* 4, of this city, the position having been made vacant by the depsugture some months ago of Carrier F. Murray Mack. The result of the examination and ,the successful contestant will not be announced for some time. .
