Melie Spratt, which occurred at
her home in the township on the
15th instant. She was the oldest
af the negro "mammies" in this
section, her age which is well
authenticated being placed at 93
years. "Aunt" Melie was the
former slave and nurse of the
Spratt family and had charge of
the children of the preceding
[feneration of whom only two,
B. M. Spratt, of Chester, and
James Spratt, of Fort Mill, survive.
When the slaves were set
free she stayed by her "white
folks," and by them was cared
for until the date of her death.
In the past she had been a great
(isherwoman and spent much of
her time along the Catawba riv?r,
but for a number of years
she had been too feeble to engage
n her favorite diversion and had
ived quietly on the Spratt farm

Work of Parent-Teachers' Club.
The community is indebted to

?or many helpful suggestions and
;ubstantial improvements in the
vork of the graded school, but
>ne of the best of the many good
;hings done by the club is the
ecent installation of the playground
apparatus on the school
grounds. A dozen swings with
nany other splendid devices
lave been erected and to see how
the youngsters, many of whom
are deprived of such amusement
at home, enjoy them is reward
sufficient for the ladies who have
worked so faithfully that the
children might be afforded this
form of pleasure and amusement.
The club is appreciative of a
handsome donation from the

W. J. Talbert, whose home is at

wallops severely Senator Tillman.
"It occurs to me," says the exCongressman,
"that it ill behooves
any man to go parading
himself over the country as a
paragon of morality and honesty
and fairness with his tainted
record hanging over him; the
fishy smell of the foul dust of
'penitentiary brick'; the sweet
scented odor of 'red cider', all
mixed up with the filthy stench
of dispensary rebates upon his

he speaks of 'sneak thieves'; and,
if he means to apply that epithet
to me. I pronounce him a

' Early Frost Predicted.
Killing frost for the section
of the State along the 34th parallel
will occur this year with October
18 as the central date, predicts
W. P. Houseal, the Dutch
weather prophet. Severe frost
at this date, he says, will be the
earliest in 12 years. Killing frost
12 years ago occurred October
11, 1904, as the earliest date for
that year and all other years
since that time. Indications during
the periods of low temperatures
also make slight frost probabout
October 7, he thinks.
