X lie; 1VIIVVT lllfe VVIIIIIIUIIIVUVIVU, I
signed by James D. Grist, of j
York, appeared a few days ago !
in the News and Courier:
Political prognosticators of
York county are predicting that
the county campaign this summer
will be the hottest in years.
While Bleasism and anti-Bleasism
will cut somewhat of a figure
the main issue will be the new
county of Catawba?whether you
are "fur it or agin' it." Sentiment
in the eastern section,
which includes Rock Hill, which
would be the county seat of the
proposed new county of Catawba,
is of course in favor of the
proposition almost to a man. In
the western section, which includes
the towns of York, Clover,
Sharon and Hickory Grove, there
is considerable opposition to the
formation of the new county,
the main argument being that
it would increase taxes in York
county if a portion of the county
secedes. On the other hand,
there are a large number of
people in western York who :
care nothing about the matter.
They argue that Rock Hill has
been wanting a county seat for
years, and for that reason has (
stirred up strife and kept alive
the question of east and west, ,
and that it will be for the best
interests of all concerned to let ;
Rock Hill go.
However, that :s by way of
introduction. The purpose of ,
this article is to tell what the ;
political forecasters say about ,
this summer's campaign. The
first indication of the likelihood
of the new county's being the
principal issue was apparent in
the County Convention, May 1.
The eastern section of the county
on that occasion succeeded in 1
n Hill man ?<k
county chairman while the west- J
ern section elected the State ''
executive committeeman.
It is being talked now that '
both sections are looking around 1
for legislative candidates, and it
is here that the rub is coming.
It is understood that Anti-Blease
leaders in York and vicinity are (
trying to unite with the Blease \
forces in this section and have
given the latter to understand .
that they are perfectly willing to |1
support Blease men for the r
Legislature, if the Blease men
seem to have a better chance of v
winning than the Anti-Blease I
men. In other words, it is said (
that they care not who goes to
the Lecnslatnre Inner ns thn
?^ .... ? I
representatives are men who are
opposed to the formation of the t
new county of Catawba.
But that is a jtame that both a
sides can play, and it is said both c
sides are playing it. The Rock |
Hill Anti-Rleaseites are said to
have made the same proposition
to the Bleasites on t he eastern | !
side of the county. All they a
want is the delegation that favors a
the formation of Catawba county. (
Fort Mill township is a portion r
of the territory which it is pro- t
posed to incorporate in the new t
county. A large i^umber of Fort v
Mill citizens favor going into the r
new county, but on the other ^
hand many do not. It is said |B
that Fort Mill political leaders B
are sore at Rock Hill i>olitical ?
i>r\ nooonrvt <il' ?> i ? ? T
Itauvio v/ll <?v VAMIIU \ / t \ V I 1(1111 *
alleged antics of the latter at t
the recent County Convention, r
and for that reason will tight the , e
new county idea tooth and toe- c
nail. Unless a majority of the 'J
citizens of Fort Mill vote to be- v
come a portion of Catawba f
county the scheme will fall flat, v
Rock Hill leaders are now ap- 0
parently making a bid to get j
back into the good graces of?
Fort Mill.
Opponents of Catawba county
in this section are aware of the a
schism between Fort Mill and 1
Rock Hill, and the understand- b
ing is that thev have been doing i t
good work toward further widen- I
ing the breach. That is the
story over here.
Candidates for the Legislature
are very slow in announcing
themselves. Not a single man
has published an official announcement.
It is understood
that W. R. Bradford, of Fort
Mill, and E. Gettys Nunn, of
Rock Hill, will seek re-election
io uie legislature. Dr. YV. (J.
White, of York, and E. W.
Pursley, of York. No. 1, are also
being spoken of as probable
candidates. It is likely that
opponents of the new county i
will name four candidates and j
proponents four, and that all
others will stand aside and see
the fur fly. It is going to Hy, too. !

Not So Bad. After All
While this old earth is convulsed
with war and hate and
tragedy, and man's lot is impregnated
with bitterness and woe.
yet it is a pretty good old earth,
after all. We have here to enjoy
the sunshine and the rain;
the warmth and light of the sun
by day and the glorious panorama
of the heavens to delight
the night; the beautiful flowers
and the bountiful harvest; the
trees, the fruits and a thousand
and one things that a gracious
Creator has lavishly bestowed
upon us. If the earth is bad,
it is because man has made it so.
Take sin out of the earth and it
would soon return to its Edenic
state. God made it good, but
man has scarred it and marred
it more than he knew. ?Selected.
