Warning!
With a shortage of ships to
move our cotton to foreign j
shores; with no indication of the;,
end of the war; with the Nation
stirred over preparedness for i i
eventualities; with the buying
power of the entire world grad- J
ually lessening day by day, it
becomes our duty to issue this ,
formal warning as the time of i
planting cotton is at hand. Let i
everyone encourage the farmer 1
to be on the safe side by raising
plenty of feed and food for the
community as well as for himself,
his family and his live
stock. (A calf, a pig. chickens
and a garden often mean the
difference between want and
monev ahead.) Economical and
safe living for all as well as
"safe farming" must be the rule :
if prosperity is to abide with us. ;
Six-cent cotton this fall would j,
spell disaster in the cotton states, j
Low price follows over-suppl.\ j,
as certainly as the night the day. ;
High prices and prosperity ovei
the South this year prove what
voluntary reduction of cotton
acreage does. Any marked in- j
crease in acreage over last yeai
is going to result in a great loss
to Southern cotton producers,
merchants and bankers, and will I
similarly affect all allied business i
and professions.
Cannup is Released.
Daniel Cannup, a white man
from Rock Hill, brought here to
jail several days ago charged |
with murder, was released Fri- \
day on his own recognizance, <
bail being fixed in the sum of |
$f>00. Thos. F. McMow of the ]
York bar appeared before his ;
honor. George W. Gage, as- i
sociate justice, in Chester Friday |
and secured the order for Cannup's
release.
Readers of this paper will re- ,
member that Cannup is charged j
with having killed his brother- j
in-law. Thomas Tayloi, about ;
last September. Cannup was
arrested after the finding of a <
skeleton near Rock Hill, which
skeleton is thought to have
been the remains of the missing
Taylor. According to the evidence
furnished at the coroner's
inquest, Cannup had made ?
threats against Taylor.? York

Negro KillVwhite Nan. ,
Brittain Price, a young white
man, died Saturday morning in a
Charlotte Hospital from injuries
sustained Friday morning when
he was murderously assaulted by
a negro, John Blanton. Price
was superintendent of a lumber
yard and when he reprimanded
Blanton, the negro grabbed a
heavy piece of wood and struck
Price a terriffic blow on the head.
He was removed to the hospital,
but never regained consciousness.
The negro was arrested later and
is confined in the Charlotte jail.
Mr. Price was at one time a
resident of Fort Mill, being employed
in one of the local mills,
and was well known to many persons
in this city. [4

The Legend of the Robin.
When the white men first
came far across the sea to this
country they found many birds
such as they had never seen |
before. But they found one
which they liked best of all. It
had a pretty red breast, and
they called it robin, for its red
breast made them think of a;
bird back in the old home which
they loved most of all.
The Indians had a story about
how the robin got his red breast.
They said it happened a long
time ago, when there was onlv
one fire in all the cold far north. ;
A hunter and his son kept the
fire burning day and night until
the father fell ill, and the son
had to watch the fire all alone.
The great white bear was waiting
for a chance to put the fire

north to himself. He saw the i
boy fall asleep; then he jumped 3
on the fire with his wet feet and i
put it out. '
But a gray robbin saw him !,
and when he was gone she! [
pecked about in the ashes till t
she found a tiny live coal. She ?
fanned it with her wings until (
it blazed out and turned her c
breast red. Then she flew away
to every hut in the cold north. '
Wherever she touched the

soon there were plenty of fires
to keep the people warm. After *
that the robin's breast was j
always red instead of gray.

NcNeely's Body Recovered.
The body of Robert Ney McNeely,
the young consul who lost
his life when the Persia was
torpedoed in the Mediterranean
several weeks ago will not, at
least any time soon, be brought
home for burial. This was the
announcement conveyed in a
telegram from the State Department
to his father, VV. R. McNeely
at his home 12 miles from
Monroe Saturday. The message
[jnoted extracts from a cablegram
and it was so far as could
be determined over the 'phone
as follows:
"Body found and buried on
desert coast in war zone. Remote
from Alexandria. Owing
to activities of war unable to get
body. Matter has careful at
tention and any further de- J
veiopments will be wired at
once."
The News of Gold Hill.
Times Correspondence.
The writer andSam'l Boyd are
the only ones on the sick list
around here that we know of,
and Sam's "pill toter" has been
dieting him on oranges for ten
days at a stretch and he is much
improved.
Mr. Carl Faris is building a
new tenant house on his place.
The turtle dove and bluebirds
are getting in some of their
spring notes, and the farmers
have done some plowing, but
have hauled in none of that
Charleston dirt yet.
We picked up a back number
of the Fort Mill Times the other)
day and we noticed that the town
lost money on that imported
"she-talker" they took on last
fall. That happens to be the case
very often with these new getups.
Now, Gold Hill just raises
her own she-talkers and they are
just good, smart, pretty, "all
.vool and a yard wide, so to speak.
Prof. Dickson and his corps of
;eachers at Gold Hill school are
ioing some fine work. We hear
;hat of late they have installed
a complete cooking outfit
and it is very likely that his she:alkers,
of whom he hap quite a
lumber, will keep the pot boiling,
ro see the children start off to
school these days with their pack
if books reminds us very much
if so many foot peddlers. In
L846, seventy years ago now, we
tvere going to school to Mr. Mereiith
Shurley. He taught in a
little log cabin which stood about
me hundred yards north of Mr.
Fred Wilson's home. Our books
consisted of a blueback speller
and Pike's arithmetic. At the
ipening of that school Mr. Shirey
made us a short speech, or
rather a lecture, but we rememler
just a few words of it. He
enuired as strict ohpdipncp from
:he grown-ups as he did from i
;he little fellows, and said to the J
hildren, "Don't eat breakfast]
n the morning until you wash
rour face and hands."
To the parents and children of
Philadelphia congregation: Mr.
(V. H. Crook and Shellie Sutton
ire striving to build up the Sunlay
school of that church and
hey wish and pray for the help
ind cooperation of every one.
Pome out, they will endeavor to
lo you good.
