If you don't believe in the town, you should move out of it. Like other places it has advantages that other places have not, and your modesty should not prevent you from making the fact known whenever the opportunity presents itself. At home or abroad, whether pursuing pleasure or engaged in business, do not neglect to give those with whom you come in contact to understand that you live in a "better town" populated by enterprising goahead, progressive people and one that is advancing instead of retrograding. If you can truthfully speak in commendation of the ability of our professional men, the squaredealing methods of our merchants, the excellence of our mechanics, the superiority of our churches, schools and public institutions, and the industry, energy and sobriety of our citizens generally, let nothing prevent you from exercising that privilege. You should learn tc believe, if you do not already, that we have all these and in addition the best located town, the finest country surrounding it with the most fertile farms tilled by the most intelligent class ol farmers to be found in the United States. , If there are any drawbacks it will not be necessary to mentior them. The people and news papers of the competing towns will relieve you of that task bj attending to that part ol it them selves. Strangers seeking a locatioi are always greatly influenced ii favor of any place whose citizen: are enthusiastic in its praise No city or town can expect t< attain prominence over its rival: unless its inhabitants appreciate the excellence and virtues o each other and will collective!: spread abroad their faith in th< present prosperity and futur greatness of their own locality Talk is a cheap commodity, bu when rightly utilized it can b made effective in many di lections and this is one of them Two Classes of Men. There are two classes of me: who go through life cursing fat and the thrifty. One class i lazy and dishonest. They neve work except under stress an never do an honest day's wor if they can avoid it, and are con sequently never wanted if a honest man can be had. Whe not torced to work they sww; their feet, grumble at the pm porous and tell how the goverr ment ought to own all propert and provide them with a living The other class are the opposit of these in many respects, an vet ? reach the same termina although by a different rout* This class represents a larg element or number of real wori ing men. Men who toil har and squander their earnings a they go whether they be mnc or little. Men who work har all day for what they can drin at night, so that they never hav a spare dollar of their own, an they, too, gradually come to loo on the sober, industrious an ' . V- >7 ' -x economical man, as an enemy, and on his possessions as if they had lost them and found them ' in his hands. And these two classes take to talking socialism or anarchy, and that the government ought to own all the property and do all the business. Picnic a Grand Success. To explain fully the success which attended the picnic and celebration held yesterday in i Fort Mill would require a great ' deal more time and space than ( The Times has at its disposal. , To say the least, the event was t one which will long be remembered by the great throng pies r ent. i ne people were here, ana doubtless the crowd would have been much larger but for the threatening weather of the early morning. Later in the day," however, the weather became i settled, with just enough cloudi; ness to make the day comfort11 able.- Estimates of the number - present varied from 2,000 to . 3,000, and then, too, there were some candidates on hand. The ! day was ideal, the people were jolly, the various amusement 1 features were carried out without a hitch, there was an abundance of dinner, and all seemed to enjoy the occasion thoroughly. Johnston Shoots Hilton. Otis Hilton, a grandson of I night Policeman N. P. Johnston, was shot and seriously wounded Tuesday night by W. F. John1 ston, his second cousin. The i shooting took place in a local drug store. According to an eye witness, | Johnston and a friend had gone into the store and ordered cold drinks. While waiting for these : Hilton came in and with the remark that he wanted to give | somebody a drink, was in the act of pulling a bottle from his shirt bosom when Johnston, without a word, tired at Hilton. ( The shot shattered the bottle neck, injured one of Hilton's i\ n rr?A\*c onrl orlo nnorl t r\ Kic qKaii). nilauu ^iuiivv u vw 1110 ouvui1 der, inflicting: a slight wound. In rapid succession Johnston ' then fired several other shots [ at Hilton, two of which took : effect in the latter's back. Hilton ' j went to his home and Johnston was immediately placed under ;! arrest. He was, however, rei leased last night upon payment . to the town of a fine of $25. , Hilton was able Wednesday r morning to be about the streets and it is expected that within a few days he will have recovered from his wounds. i The European War. * Four great powers of Europe ? . Austria-Hungary. Russia. France ) and Germany?are engaged in s actual warfare, but two of them, e Germany and France, have not f openly declared war against Y each other; as far as is known, e and have not even severed diploe matic relations. This is despite the fact that Germany's ulti' inatum to France either has 1 been ignored or rejected. e The explanation of this would i- appear to be that Lermany and i. France are each seeking to throw upon the other the onus of beginning a war that may plunge n all Furope into bloodshed. In e fact, while the nations of Europe 3 are flying at each other's throats r they are vieing with each other in protesting their desire to , maintain peace. In this curious situation, " France, according to British n opinion, has the strongest justin fication. She was the last to g mobilize and seems to have taken the greatest precautions to avoid i- frontier collisions, y Or. the other hand Germany r. in invading French territory " without making a formal decla(j ration of war has violated the neutrality of Luxemburg and ' declines to give any promise to "* j respect Belgium neutrality. :e Short of actual mobilization the British government is taking d all necessary steps to meet a is situation unprecedented in the h nation s history. . || ' A.
